Need an answer urgently

Postby Reeco on Tue Feb 03, 2009 12:45 am

Hi All, I will be offering myself and the services of my Fromty tomorrow down here in Swansea, as the snow is bad. I have a B series and I would like to know can I use my 4 x 4 system on the roads covered in snow ? and regarding the high low gear ratio can someone explain that to me. TYVM in advance. ATB. Reeco

Ste, Thanks for that Mate, I take it then it's not advisable to use the Fronty's 4 x 4 set up on a very heavy snow filled road, is this correct.

I would never use the 4 x 4 set up on the road but I thought what if the road has say 3 inches or more of snow. ATB. Reeco

It can be used on just 1mm of ice, if you can see you are likely to loose traction or you feel it loosing traction ( feels similar to a slipping clutch ) you will be fine in 4wd as the slipping action will dissipate the wind up in the axle and transfer box.

Deep snow your even more likely to need 4wd.

This road was enough to cause us to use 4wd a few weeks ago, its a layer of ice under the slush/snow

Ste, so do I only use the 4 x 4 set up if I feel the Fronty start slipping or can I drive around on the snow with it on all the time, sorry if this sounds dull I don't want to kill my Fronty lol. My older Mk 1 wasn't this complicated lol. ATB. Reeco

reeco , dont take this the wrong way mate but if you are not that confident of what your car can do /cant do , is it advisable to offer your services to help others ? also there may be an insurance issue .

The same rules as the A series just you can shift to 4wd on the move up to 56mph, I think it may be 60mph on the B series just airing on the side of caution.
And also with the B you dont have to reverse to unlock the hubs its all done for you.

And yes if the surface is slippy you can drive around on it in 4wd, if it gets firmer/traction, disengage 4wd go to 2wd until you feel the traction lessening then just flick the switch and your back to 4wd, its all about how the car feels and judging the conditions.

It seems a lot of messing but once used to it, it becomes second nature and it saves a lot on fuel as opposed to full time 4wd that landrovers have.

I always say get to a pay and play, no need to go in the ruff stuff just very mild tracks with no chance of damage as learn about the car, its fun and safe, thats why we chose Bala offroad for the annual meet as there is lots for the nutters and lots for people who dont want to dent or scratch their car but would like to know how it works.
