It's a long old process. Depending on the type of work you want to do you will need secure premises with storage facilities, full H&S implementation, audited accounts, probably VAT registration, proof of training etc etc.

The best bet is to get in contact with AVRO, as they will have all the information you would need

We used to be on Police rota, but that all changed (down here anyway) when the AA talked their way onto the scene.
They offered to pay for the rights to TA recoveries....which the Plods accepted (of course) but the AA couldnt possibly cope with an area the size of Devon & Cornwall with their facilities.
So the rub was that if we wanted "in" on the recovery scene (which we had managed quite well for some 30 years) we would have to now pay the AA and meet all their criteria. Their criteria being;
Ability to lift a vehicle from the carriageway to the recovery vehicle
Take full control of the scene upon arrival
Clean up the carriageway
Ability to recover more than one vehicle from an incident
Ability to recover caravans/trailers

then there was the secure compound
Undercover secure compound (for forensic work to be carried out)

It became rediculous and the cost of recovery had to go up, typically from £60 to over £150 just to break even, just the cost of the equipment (without the training required) is prohibitive.

So I dont know about your area but down here the insurance companies dont have any say in who recovers anything, only the highest bidders get the work. :evil:

& that has lead to the loss of most body repair shops down here...that and the stupid prices/repair methods insurance companies want for them to be "approved repairers" ( again the highest back-door bidder wins the work)

I would say (bearing in mind I have no experience of recovery) that recovering motorbikes would be far simpler then recovering cars.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

There are a few motorbike recovery operations on ebay, one in Wales even uses a Frontera.

Worth a punt advertising there just make sure you have the name of every bike you can think of in your listing then the search will pick you up all the time :wink:

Get your name around as many mcc as you can.
Advertise, every ware, in mags and shop windows.

Remember, the insured person can nominate there own recovery operator and repairer etc.
When this doesn’t happen, is when the driver (rider) is unable to make the call.
Then the duty recovery is called.
Find out who ‘THAY’ are, then subcontract your services, im sure they will benefit as MC work can be specialised …….

That sounds really weird to me as no-one but the police, traffic wardens and emergency authorities have the legal right to direct traffic. In Scotland, recovery vehicles only do the recovery. Its up to the police to deal with the traffic, and they contact the local council to clean up the mess left on the roads.
I did breakdowns and recoveries for 20 odd years, and this was and still is the way its done.

Stuart.
Breakdown companies on the police rota, recover anything Stuart. They dont call out a motorcycle firm simply to recover a bike mate. To get on the rota is very difficult, there is a long waiting list, and you have to be well established and known. If you cannot recover all types of vehicles, you wont have a chance mate.
Dont really want to put you on a downer, but these are the facts. (in Scotland anyway)
