Re: Monty rides again!!Well done. Seeing as the car didnt cost much and the parts were reasonable should be a cheap motor. Hows she driving now? Ad have you got a new dizzy and rotor arm sorted yet?

Re: Monty rides again!!Yes it will be the alternator belt squealing, will need tightening up a tad, why do you need to uprate the alternator ?

... Happy motoring Regards Roo
Re: Monty rides again!!If your only having a few lights you wont need to uprate the alternator, its unlikely roof lights will be on for any great period of time so what you have should be fine as long as the battery is in good condition.
I run a CB, PDA, Stereo, and a dash board gizmo without any problems and I have a lower rated battery than I should have, but it was free Save your money to spend else where would be my advise. Ste

Re: Monty rides again!!Alternator is a 70amp model and will be fine for running extra lights. Belts are either worn (quite likely given the age of the car) or just need tightening. Check the belts and if they have any cracks or splits in them and/or look excessively glazed then they need replacing.
Not sure how they are fitted on the 2.4 but a rule of thumb when tightening if you press on the broadest part of the belt (the longest run between pulleys) with your finger when you have about a fingers depth of flex they are about right. Over tightening can place extra stress on bearings and cause premature wear of bearings or bend shafts.
Re: Monty rides again!!Thanks hubby replaced all the belts when we first got the car, its always squeaked. Not sure if it needs tightening or not. Hubby said something about bearings?
Re: Monty rides again!!Spray some wd40 on the alternator, we did that when it was started when we were up there and that cured it. wd40 will only be a short term fix. 3in1 oil would be better but at the end of the day its only a slightly longer term solution, although I have had 3in1 cure noisy alternators before now. Could just be that it needs use and will work its way out of the system soon.
Re: Monty rides again!!glad its running
