icy roads 2 or 4wd

Probably sounds a bit daft but for driving round an icy corner, is 4wd actually any better than 2wd. I often wonder if as in our fine vehicles with no centre diff the axles would wind up, slip and course a loss of sideways stability.

I work in Sheffield, there are loads of roundabouts so in the wet I spend a good half the time going sideways, only prob with the Fronty is because its quite tall is sometimes looks a bit ungamely when the rear tryes pick up again, good fun though.

To be safe most of us, Alex excluded as his 4wd is bust and he is a nutter, used it on the icy tarmac while out laning at the weekend, but it has to be quite slippy to aviod wind up, Every now and then I purposely drove onto a slippy patch and felt the wheel release the wind up, then went back to 2wd.

I only ever engage 4WD if I'm either off road or if the car simply won't drive on the surface of ice/snow. I find 2WD fine as long as you take it easy.

And great fun when you don't (sidewaaaaaayyyyyys)

Just out of curiosity. Do you have to release any wind up before reselecting 2WD or will it dissipate just by carrying out that action?

My local estate roads were a bit "lively" this morning.

I always use 2H on icy roads and adjust the speed accordingly, especially on MT's. Once you loose control (2 or 4WD) the momentum of our heavy trucks will carry them further than a lighter road car.

Side swipe a kerb and it will easily take a tyre off a rim (rather than ding a low profile tyre's rim on a road car)

Take care
