Bleeding DTI Diesel system

Postby pinky on Tue Jan 20, 2009 1:57 pm

Went down to Cornwall at Christmas to visit relies and have a bit of turky on the beach.

Got as far as Exiter then found the Fronty was really struggling to get up hill, I think the penny dropped that something was amiss when I was doing about 30 flat out when an artic flew past at about 60.

Figured it must be the fuel filter, I bought one ages ago but never plucked up the courage to change it. Knowing that if I don't prime it then I risk wiping out the injection pump. With this in mind made it to my destination and booked it into VX who changed it. Run perfectly after that.

Question is I have a wicks type rubber bulb primming pump, but do I need to fit a shcrader type fitting to the end, or if I take that little cap off the pump can I push the pipe strait on, obviusly meaning the second I remove the cap all the fuel will shoot strait back to the tank.

Have primed many a marine diesel in the past but the likes of Perkins, bmc, ford ect all have the good sense to fit a priming pump to the engine.

So it is a schrieder valve. I already have the pump, just need the valve. Maybe I can use the one off my foot pump.

I probably will never need it unless I run out of diesel.

Thanks for that.

It probably is, the air con on my yank has a similar valve, looks the same as a tyre valve.
