fabricator needed

i've finally put my hand in my pocket & bought a caravan chassis to build my transporter, couple of questions, does anyone know the best type of steel, i know it's going to be box section but i need to know sizes & does anyone know a place os someone that can weld it all up? cos i really don't trust my own welding

thinking of something like this, red is caravan chassis, black is the part i need to make up, sizes are in good old feet & inches

all the sections without sizes are just my idea for added strength, so may not be needed

it is going to carry a mk4 Escort that weighs around 850kg's

Hmmm, theres a lot of work to do, and i dont like the idea of only having one axle.

not sure about alot of work, 2" x 3mm box section, basically a square frame, i used to be a fabricator & could knock the frame up in 2 hours, but no longer have the tools to do it.

it should be fine with one axle & the beauty of alco chassis' is you can just bolt another axle on if needed

I agree with Rifleman i think you need two axles for wieght distrobution, but that depends on what you intend to tow.
I should think some one will be along later with the right info for axle laden wieghts.
With your design its going to be about 400kg possibly more with second axle and a winch. It's a nice project though. Where in Brum are you? I may be able to find you somwhere to do the work. Drop me a P.m.

i'm right next to the NEC, all that's going on there is an old mk4 escort, no winch etc

you will need to build it high as the axel width will not be wide enough to let an escort pass between the 2 wheels

plus most single axel caravan only have a 1300kg max axel rating


looking at the spec i dont think it will be any good he says it has a 1000kg tow hitch that is only a ton plus the space between the tyres is only about 5ft 6in

make a nice chassis for a camping trailer
