AA V RAC

Postby b19sin on Tue Dec 09, 2008 12:36 pm

i know there are a lot of brake down compaines to chose from but which is the best?

i ask as you may know i have recently used the AA and they sent local garage out to me and he couldn't / didn't want to help so i had to ring up again and had to moan at them to send a AA van out to me.

so who is the best one to go with in the futuer?

I have only ever been with the AA, but i have to say that ive never had a problem with them. :) they have been there every time i have had to call them out. The last time the service van turned up after 45mins and had to call the recovery truck which was there 2hrs later, i now its a bit of a wait but you dont know were the vehicles gota come from. :)
enjoy it while you can. steve.

Always been with the AA and had no probs, not that I have had to call them out much. Not sure what the service is like from the companies insurers use. As alot of the prices seem similar I will stick with AA until they mess up.

Ive been with the AA for 8 years, the only time they have been called out is once when I locked the dog in the car with the keys, the daft mut couldnt work the door  the AA came out in 20 minutes unlocked the door with a technique I have since mastered.
The only other times they have been called out is to Lee when she broke down in the Rover both times they where there in less 20 minutes and gave a call to tell her how close they where, both times they got the car going.
One thing with the AA when you renew the price is always higher than the advertised price for new customer on the web site, phone them and say you want that price, they always oblige

i used to be a breakdown mechanic for many years working for a garage. We worked for all the big companies including the ones you mention.
The garages that the AA use are sent on update courses run by themselves and are really good. I was shocked though, to hear that a garage they sent to you was not impressive as they are hard on them when that happens.
The RAC on the other hand, are not proffessional. Yes there will be stories around no doubt, where people will be happy with them. But I can tell you from personal experiences that i have had to go to loads of their cockups and repair them before fixing the original problem. Also my wife used to be with them and she broke down on the motorway. The RAC decided to tow her to a petrol station as she had run out of fuel. Yes i did say TOW, on a strap at 60 mph. She had never been towed before and was pooh scared and shaking by the time they reached the garage. She put fuel in, onlt to find out that the fault was electrical. You can imagine my reaction to all this, and to make it worse, my wife was 7 months pregnant at the time. Anyway, rant over.
Green flag and companies like that all send out garages, but they are moniteed and visited by them regularly. As it happens, 3 of the companies are owned by the same person.
So take your pick, but the AA are very good, and will attempt to get you going at the roadside rather than recover you.
Hope this helps you.
I am covered by my insurance for recovery only as being a mechanic, I could fix it myself, but if im miles away from home, i cant get it back.
Regards, Keith.

My Dad was with the AA since the early 60's then in the 90's he put me down for an AA card, between us we had 40 years, and in that period we called them out 17 times.... In 2000 they wrote him a letting telling him that "we had used their services too many times, and in the future we would have to pay for them to come out on a break down"  ..

My Dad being a calm collected & patient man, took both AA cards and cut them up into hundreds of pieces     , and placed them carefully into their letter that they had sent and placed them back into their envelope and sent it back to customer services , and told them exactly what he thought of them, and the shoddy treatment that we had received

We joined the RAC after, and so far we haven't had to call them out!................ Thankfully       Because if they send him a letter like the AA did, think he'll blow a fuse

my van was with RAC and theyalways took ages to come out. My cars have been with AA for 16 years and they are brilliant. I've got Homestart, roadside, relay and £500 parts and labour.
