Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpEngine management comes on as soon as i do 60mph. also squeeking whirring noise coming from wheels and auto hubs getting really hot. ran out of fuel today due to suspected leak just before i ran out heard a couple of knocks and engine management came on. since then has been coming on and off. hubby had car in 4wd mode this morning after he changed the fuel filter is there any possibility the 4wd hasnt disengaged properly? strange noise from wheels is worse when reversing. ???wind up??? also i posted about an oil leak from rear diff from centre where propshaft goes in and no one answered as i wanted to know what to replace.

Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpWill happily fit bits and bobs, has anyone looked the car over for you? Whirring from wheels, brakes sticking, no brake pads. 4wd system needs to be used occasionally to keep moving parts lubricated. Dont use 4wd on tarmac unless its in a straight line. Try engaging 4wd again, drive forwards 100metres or so then reverse a similar distance, repeat a few times, see if that helps.
Rear diff propshaft seal is the bit you are looking for, probably a VX only part but couldnt say for certain. Suspension, what makes you think the suspension is completely shot? May just require some new bushes. Again has anyone looked the car over and given you a definite list of things that need doing?
Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpWould appreciate someone having another look. Hubby says the leaf springs are flat no bend in them at all. Front lower ball joints definately need replacing as that was an MOT advisory from last year as does the CV Joint Gaiter. The rear diff seal needs doing for sure as leaking. Think the transmission oil needs replacing and hubby not sure what or how but is willing to learn. Clutch thrust bearing noisy, cluthc sometimes sticks halfway down and spring creaks. Would be looking at changine front upper and lower ball joints and changing to poly bushes. Not sure after that. Anyway. We can come up and see you when you are free?? You cant be that far away. xx
Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpClutch sticking and creaking could be a split bulkhead, common problem and can either be welded up or bolted.
Noisy release bearing... Hmmm Quite a big job and to be honest with you its not worth doing until you need a new clutch. Mine has been noisy for 4 years now and I have no intention of touching it until the clutch gives up the ghost. Clutch pedal may just need adjustment, bleeding, new master seals etc and may not be as bad as you think. If leaf springs are completely flat then yes, they will need doing. Lower ball joints can be a pain to get off but nothing that a large hammer cant sort out. CV boot easy to get at when doing something like a ball joint as the hub assembly has to come away anyway. Rear diff seal... Not sure about this as Iv never done one. but I have a haynes manual handy and will have a look.
Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpDiff Pinion seal seems simple enough but would prefer someone who has done it before to confirm.
Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpBefore you remove the pinion nut mark it in relation to the pinion and mark the flange in the same way (pop mark thems best)
After initially loosening the nut, count the number of turns of the nut to remove it. remove the flange, oil seal and fit new seal. Align the flange when re-fitting, count the turns of the nut back on...it should finish back in the same position, you can go very slightly tighter, but not much because you're tightening against a collapsable spacer. What have I told you about Thinking Erroll??
Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpThats really good information from mcooo there about counting the turns of the nut when re-fitting the nut to the flange.
Its been years since I fitted a Pinion Oil Seal, and reading that post all the memories came flooding back. They usually have a nylon lock nut fitted at the flange might be worth replacing it, if possible .............. Good luck My Fronty thinks its a grown-up Tonka Toy [how sad is that] ?

Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpRight suspension has gotten worse, today rear of car is so low it almost touches the wheels. Looks like its been lowered!!
Has to be fixed. Will purchase the bits and bobs I need, but just to clarify can someone post me any bits I have forgotten? lower/upper ball joints, cv joint gaiter, poly bushes, rear leaf spring kit x2, diff seal, ? gas shock absorbers. Let me know when you are next free.
Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpMilnerOffroad do all the bits you need. Should have everything in one go then.
Re: Engine management light and strange noise from wheels...helpThe upper ball joints you need have 4 bolt holes (as far as I know), best check the ones on the car before ordering.
Lower ball joints for a isuzu trooper will fit if they are not listed for the frontera, just dont get lower BJ's for an IMPORT model trooper.
