ive bought my daughter one of these for Christmas it uses Linux lite does anyone know if i can install msn messenger on it for her and if so how

I would say go to microsoft website and see if there is a linux version. I doubt it though.Best bet would be to do a google search for linux and msn messenger.

Linux is a completely different operating system to Windows although there is quite a bit of software available for it now and most, if not all of it is freeware.

You can get Pidgin messenger to run on it, which will connect to all the main messenger programs in one application.

Its going to be a real pig for you to install MSN over Linux.

As above, you can install Pidgin but thats not always the most reliable method. You may also see some plug-and-play items (such as MP3 players, Mobile Broadband dongles etc) will not work until you mess about with Drivers and settings.

If you can, return it for either an XP model or change it for an Asus (which is similar to the one you have and they start at £149)

i am toying with the idea of installing xp on it myself its got 1gb of ram and a 120gb hard drive so i dont think i will have a problem

You can do that, you have plenty of space, although its taken 6 IP engineers over 2 weeks to have everything working on it, bloody thing just did not want to know!

For starters only certain types of 3g Mobile broadband dongle can be used. This is the same for other mobile broadband packages. Google for it and you will see the problems that people have faced.

Connecting to 3g mobiles / blackberrys / Nokia N96 - issues galore
Storage devices - issues
Plug and play digital cameras - took us 4 hours.

This was before we installed XP on a Linux machine and given the choice again, the owner would have certainly gone down the windows route first time off.

Dont think that we are Joe Bloggs sitting at home having problems, we were on a night shift monitoring/repairing the complete IP network / Data network for the largest telco in the US
