Re: Timing BeltAll cars have timing belts, timing chains or in some engines, timing gears.
Timing gears are where the crankshaft and cams are connected and timed via a series of gears between them. Timing chains usually start rattling when they are on the way out. Timing belts usually need changing between 25k and 50k miles, but as mentioned, get it replaced if you are unsure of when it was last done. Timing gears have distinctly variable service intervals and its best to follow the manufacturers instructions in this case. Although I would imagine it would be like a timing chain in that it would start rattling before the gearing failed.
