Hi-Lift

Guys,

Finally got around to getting a Hi-lift (after Fridays Little incident).
I was going to use it to help with changing the springs on the rear (1 snapped). Thing is, there is no jacking points!
Any ideas?

This might sound completly stupid, but wud the side steps on a swb be able to take the strain of a high lift jack. :? they are bolted to the chassis, and I was just wundering if anybody has tried using these as jacking pionts ? :)

You can lift on the tow ball, but make sure you are on tarmac or similar when you do, otherwise they have a habit of toppling and hitting people in the head ...

Keep the tow bar mounting cross bar, it gives a degree of protection and a jacking point for the rear, and you can also do this.
Grind or take the towing ball bar off though, you will see on the piccy.

There are tighter on te B series than the A series so I think coil compresors may help lots, but you can try putting the jack between the axle and bump stop on the opposite side to the coil your replacing and see if that opens the space a bit, it worked great for me but that was an A.
Also remember your axle stands under the tow bar point should the jack fail.
And use a bit of wood on the top of the bottle jack or you will crush the bump stop mount, been there done that :lol:

In a word, yes.

B's are a pig to do. Almost worth dropping the passenger side trailing arm that comes over the fuel tank. It stops the axle coming far enough away from the chassis to allow the springs to drop off.

If you dont you will need to compress the passenger side to get old out and new in. You must do passenger side first, and you must drop the anti roll bar and lower shocker mounts. Doing one side at atime you can get a bit more articulation by jacking the opposite side as high as it goes.

Please be careful when using a Hi-Lift (or similar jack. They are inherently unstable in use and can easily come detached allowing the vehicle to fall. In fact, one use of the hi-lift jack is just that - to raise the front (or rear) up clear of ruts and then allow it to fall in an arc out side of the ruts.

Yes, use a Hi-Lift to raise the vehicle, but then lower it onto axle stands before working on it.

Also, bear in mind that you'll have to jack the vehicle to quite some height before a wheel will leave the ground, that's' why the standard jack is designed to raise the axle.
