ignition

Postby Tommo on Wed Oct 15, 2008 8:18 am

I am having trouble sometimes getting the ignition key out of my 3.2 V6. This doesn't happen everytime, although it is now sitting on my drive with the key stuck in. Help!

Hi ,

If you can still turn the key it will mean that you will be able to remove the lock from the lock housing, normally you turn the key to position two, look carefully at the lock housing, you should see a small hole in it, about half way down the lock barrels lenght, push something small ( allan key ) into the hole, this should let you now pull out the lock. Most Vauxhalls are like this, the Frontera should be the same, but dont take my word for it.

Reasons for getting stuck

Have you just had a new key cut ? there maybe same burs left on the key.

Its not likely that the waffers in the lock are wore out, as this would stop you turning it & you have not said of any problems with turning the key.

The only problem with having to obtain a new lock & barrel is that you will have it coded to the car, or you will have to try & remove the transponder chip from you old key & swap it for the new one.

Kind Regards

Tommo, it sounds like you have sticking tumblers mate.
Get a hold of a tin of WD40 with the wee straw fitted and push it in along side the key. Spray lots inside and work the key back and forth. If you get the key out, coat it with copper slip and keep working the key in and out of the barrel.
I have small syringes I fill with the stuff and periodically push it into all my locks and I never have any problems, even in the extreme cold.
If you cannot get a hold of these syringes, pm me and i'll send you one.
Keith.
Regards, Keith.

I went the simple route first, and the WD has done the trick. Thanks for your help.

Great stuff mate. Remember tho' WD is a releasal, you still need to lubricate so get some copperslip in there bud.
Glad to see its working again.
