Greenlaning

Postby Grumbleweed on Wed Sep 10, 2008 10:52 am

What are these like on the rough stuff? I'm not talking about winch challenging up sheer faces- Been there done that!
I mean for axle articulation and general green-lane transiting.

Might go and give it a run out this weekend.

Have a watch of this and make your own mind up:

YouTube Video - three standard Fronteras in the Welsh countryside

YouTube Video - Some standard and mildly modified Fronteras in north Wales

Looks good- sort of thing i was thinking.

With the leaf sprung cars- are they as good as the coilers?

Also- What is the achilles heel of the cars- i.e. on land rovers it is the halfshafts.

I am assuming that given the amount of standard bash-plating underneath they are good for some reasonable lanes!!

I have done some pretty serious off-roading (pics below) but nothing in other than a landy.

Am very excited to see what something a little better built can do!!

the only downside of a fronty is the relativelty low rear diff, but if you have a suspension lift, a body lift and some bigger boots, you can lift that a couple of inches and not for a fortune 8) 8) 8) 8)

Ooo, laning in the snow:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qoWhScFdhM

I've had a coiler (2.8TDi) for 6 years and have not had any real problems when out laning. I've also recently bought a 2.0i Sport with leafs. My view is that the coils will articulate better, but that is probaly because my Sports leafs are new and perhaps a little stiff.

The only problem area I'm aware of is perhaps the cooling system on the 2.0i's, as it is quite old now and the aged rubber hoses have been known to burst on the climb up the Wayfarer from the west (I know of two)

The auto front hubs can give out (as they wear), but other wise most lanes could be driven by a standard Frontera.

i found the biggest issue was ground clearence, but easy to solve.. Also the fact that they are indi front sus does limit you options if you want to go real high, but plenty of ways around it, as i'm sure lots will tell you..

I was really pleasently suprised when i went from l/r to using the fronty's off road.
