4x4 gear stick pops out into neutralHello I have just bought my frontera 2.2 limited four days ago never owned one before and was wondering if you could help me with the four wheel drive gear box I don't know if I'm doing it properly but when I changed into 4 wheel drive by pressing a button on the dashboard while the vehicle is moving at about 50 miles per hour on the road it drives in 4 wheel drive for a little while and then the 4x4 gear stick pops out into neutral and I can't push it back till I stop. Am I doing something wrong or do I have a problem with my gear box thanks Nigel.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming...'Wow! What a ride!
Re: 4x4 gear stick pops out into neutralHi, You shouldnt use 4wd on a hard surface (concrete, tarmac etc) as something will break. It will 'pop out' of 4wd as a safety measure.
4wd in fronteras should only ever used on surface where the wheels are allowed to slip otherwise wind-up will occur. See here for a description of Wind-Up and 4wd systems in general: http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/info/4wd.htm And here: www.fronteraowners.co.uk/info/using4wdfaq.htm
Re: 4x4 gear stick pops out into neutralThanks for your reply your advice has been very helpful

Re: 4x4 gear stick pops out into neutralUse of 4wd should be documented on the reverse side of the drivers sun visor in B series (which yours is).
Is your car petrol or diesel ??
Re: 4x4 gear stick pops out into neutralPetrol, im thinking owing to the LPG ref

Re: 4x4 gear stick pops out into neutralThanks everyone for your replies as you can probably work it out I don't know the first thing about off-road or at least not in a 4 wheel drive vehicle. As for why was I putting it in 4 wheel drive at 50 mph well firstly I knew nothing about wind up and the purpose of doing this was just to find out if the car was making any usual noises having only got it for days before. One of my mates tells me that when the car is accelerating he can hear a noise rather like a stack of cards been flicked through this is just under hard acceleration the vehicle is a petrol version and has not been modified in any way does anyone know what that might be? The vehicles done 41,000 miles and has a full service history so I'm hoping that this is just normal and nothing to worry about. Cheers.
