renault scenic coil packs ???

evening all

( not sure if this is in the right place )

im trying to get my brothers renault scenic ready for him getting back from afganistan next month
but common fault with these is COIL PACKS it has 4 seperate coil packs 1 on top of each plug
there seems to be atleast 1 not working roughly £ 25 each from motor factors
does anyone know of an easy way to test these with out having to hook it up to a machine ???

or is it just a case of taking 1 off with the spark plug and putting the end off the plug up against something metal and if theres a spark its ok ???

any help would be much appreciated

You should be able to test them with a multimeter for ohms etc but you would need a haynes manual for some reference for what figures they actually should be.
Has a coilpack gone down totally?
Tried unplugging 1 coilpack at a time with the engine running and comparing each cylinder note at a time?
If its just 1 cylinder and the same coilpack is used just buy 1 and interchange it down the line until you find the duff one.

had this problem with wifes scenic went down the same route as you are only to be told by Renault that this shorts out coil pack? & that they give up in pairs? the way that they test them is to disconnect one at a time if it runs the same not that one if worse thats the one that buggered ( very technical these Renault mechanics thousands of pounds gadgets & still dont know how to use them ) £25 each is cheap renault wanted £80 each fitted.

Had this trouble with my Laguna, RAC man replaced what he told me was the duff one to find the following day we'd had two go together. Price sounds good I paid £40 each.If two are faulty its still possible to tell by removing them one at a time.Then swap the possible dud for one you know changes the engine note when its removed.

well got me confused this

with engine running
unpluged coil pack 1 and engine cut out ( so guess this 1 is ok )
unpluged coil pack 2 and the engine note droped but didnt cut out
unpluged coil pack 3 and the engine note droped but didnt cut out
unpluged coil pack 4 and engine cut out ( so guess this 1 is ok )

what i cant understand is with the engine note droping on 2 & 3 when unpluging them ( does this mean there ok )

Same as my Laguna, change 1and 2 over, see if 2 dies and 1 changes the engine note, change 3 and 4 and check for the same. It seems you have two duff ones. They are well known for failing in pairs. Sounds like 1and 4 are ok.
