Starter Motor probs

Hi guys and girls, just want to check if any of you have had a problem with your starter motors on the 2.8 lwb.
When you turn the key the starter motor now just spins, am I correct in assuming this is a replacement starter job or am I missing something else before I lose some hard earned cash!
Battery is ok by the way and all connections ok. Read a bit on here about extra earth cables etc but that wont apply here will it?

I assume they are just a conventional starter, if so take it of and give the shaft that the starter cog travels up and down on a clean and oil up and inspect for wear, has always worked for me in the passed.

Yes, sounds like when my starter went, looks like a new one, in the region of £95 on ebay.

its normally the pinion that gets dirty and sticks could be worn or the bush's want replacing a lot of auto electricians can replace the bush's and pinion

or you could do it yourself if your hand with the spanner's

you could try cleaning it first but with mine it was the drive, it worked ok when i took it off the truck but just spins when it on. it was the dive that had broke and it didnt spin with load.

when you take it off if you can move the cog/wheel of it then its the same as mine.

it cost me 40.00 for it to be recond ( bushes an dive)

I take it you tried the trusty smack with ab bar? just to be sure, or bump it a few feet and drop into gear in case there is a tooth missing on the fly.

I know a local guy who strips and repairs starters and alternators. Bet someone local to you does, saves ££, try asking a local factors or yellow pages.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas. Due to being at work 16 hrs+ a day this time of year had to bite the bullet and get it fixed at friends garage. When he got it off it had fallen apart inside! New one fitted and runs fine again..........owner down 220 quid mind ........more overtime needed then
