2.8TDI
A little over 6 years ago I had determined through research that the 2.8 gave the best mpg and the best 0-60 of all the estates - that's what I went for and have not looked back.

Not got any experience of the 2.5 so can't comment but a few on here have them so will no doubt chip in at some point. The 2.8 seems to be regarded as the strongest, most reliable of the diesels and fairly basic so relativly easy to maintain. I have just bought a swb 2.8 so am hoping that what I have just said is true Some of the others with more knowledge will give you more imfo on the other models.

Great thanks guys... I thought with it being the Isuzu it would be the best... Thanks for the info on available years as well... Ive seen a couple but to be honest i was a bit sceptical about paying £495 for one..or £695 for another! I thought at that price it would be a bag of yon stuff! Can i also ask folks, what to look out for when looking at one??

You need to look after the 2.8, with regular oil changes (around 3000 miles)
The engine is interference (pistons overlap the valves), so if you can't determine the last time the cam belt was changed, get it sorted asap (change at no more than 40,000 miles)
Vacuum pipes are prone to perishing/splitting at this age (they were available from May 1995 to September 1996). This will manifest problems in cold starting and fuel consumption (amongst other things)
Turbo charges have failed - listen for screaming or if you have the opportunity, take the front intake pipe off and check the impellor shaft for play (there should not be any) new turbo about £450, 2nd hand from a scrapper (if you can find one, £50).
EGR system is probably coked up, but most people here seem happy to blank them off. On a good engine (ie, my new one), you can see/hear them chattering away at idle.
Check the quality of the air hoses - a split/porous one will reduce power.
Erratic oil pressure gauge reading is most likely a loose connection on the sender unit - easily fixable.
There's a little to think about - I'm sure there'll be more from others later.
