Hiya Gang,
Just thought i would add a further contribution given the gravity of this topic.
The first point i would like to make is wouldnt all of the staff that work overtime like to spend more time doing what they want to,not what the employer does? Such as spending time with family (Playing in your Fronty?) not ceaslessly toiling away because the basic is crap?
Soldiers and traffic wardens are poorly paid but according to your logic why dont they just leave as the money is so bad?
I applaud the work soldiers do and am grateful to them but i might be correct in thinking that danger might have been mentioned to them at the Army careers office just before they signed up!
Miners/rig workers/builders/ scaffolders know the risks and choose their jobs but also have to negotiate fair renumeration for that role.
If i might further add that driving for an employer records the highest number of deaths per year of any employment and that includes far surpassing all of the known "dangerous" jobs put together. (Figures from HSE).
The right to withdraw your labour (i.e Strike) is not taken lightly and i understand that the drivers union has negotiated long and hard however i do agree with the point made about not buying shell fuel as this may well hurt the company which may cause them to influence this dispute in favour of the drivers.
One final point, just leaving or walking away doesnt tackle the issue of low pay or poor basic however negotiation might and last resort strike at least tackles the matter in the open as opposed to the employer merely employing someone else on the same crap money knowing full well they will have to do overtime to make ends meet. (Thus you are right it saves the employer all those NI contibutions when obviously he doesnt have the correct number of employees to fulfill his order obligations).
I have an image in my mind of Bob Cratchett but as we all know Scrooge was still getting richer
My coat is on, can you forward my hat?

I work overtime because I want too! I was given the chance to refuse but was happy to sign an agreement to work more than the 48hrs if requested. I dont have to. I like the extra money it pays to go off roading and driving Fronteras etc....

Anyways this is too political and thats not what I joined FOG for. Will bow out of this argument and leave it to others. :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:

This isn’t so much about a pay rise, as its more to do with the pay cuts year on year
Tony Woodley (Unite) makes this point: " Shell outsourced my members' jobs years ago to cut costs and have been very successful at the workers' expense.”
"Despite what management is saying, our members are on a basic wage of £31,800 and if they had remained working for Shell that would now be £46,000. What we are asking for is a basic wage of £36,000."

To settle the deal it will only cost one M

The average pay may have been interpreted (2k more bit), as that intro has no direct quote.

Coincidently the souse for info was from the bbc too

It’s the members of the union than make a union, the workers them selves decide if they accept or reject any offer, they also are the only ones that decide if they want to take industrial action, and what form, and how far to take it.
As for unions and all the people befour the unions existed, if they never had made a stand, (and many paid with there lives) then nor would your 8 hour day, weekends off, holidays and all your lush comforts.

From some of the comments in this thread one wonders if they want to see the return of the combination acts. Lets not forget the Tolpuddle Martyrs

As for money, any worker doesn’t want to have no pay rise each year; if they did it would actually be a pay cut.

These guys are standing up for them selves and exercising there right to strike.
Its not easy or quick to get to the stage of withdrawing labour, and I’m sure the decision wasn’t made lightly.

Remember these guys are not getting paid for striking, respect to them and there families.

It seems that because they earn what could be described as a good wage already, people think they should not be allowed to improve there T&C.

If we had been talking about people on the minimum wage, im sure that wouldn’t be clouding any judgments.

They do earn a good wage. They are ungratful if they believe they do not. TBH, the only way with which to improve your T&C's is to improve yourself (learn to do something more productive or whatever) or leave. Why should they get more money for no extra work... it's all take take take take, I want more money for no more work.....
I'm glad they don't get paid for striking.
They can go ahead and starve the ungrateful sods!
TBH, minimum wage workers (can't think of any right now) or 41K Truckers, it doesn't make any difference... infact I'd be even more peeved it was the minimum wage crowd, lazy ******** should get a proper job..

Still, I digress.

Back to the Truckers.
Lazy and ungreatful.. they probably just fancied a few days off work!.. After all it's SO dangerous, and hazarderous.. the stress must kill them!
With regards to the Unions, they are formed basically to gang up on the Business, and try to force it's hand... thankfully thatcher took care of most of it....
That time when the TVL Crowd went on strike their "Union" claimed that their jobs where moving to China or India or whatever. When infact, TVL had expressly said, we DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH STAFF, so we are opening in India or China, You WILL NOT LOOSE YOURS JOBS!
Yet they went on strike anyway... Pathetic, completly pathetic.. they just felt like a game of golf in the sun! I have no respect for the unions... trouble is in this counrty we have no spirit to better ourselves.. it's all "I want more money for nothing". We shoudl stop believeing this is normal, and actually start working for a living.. unlike these lazy gets on strike.
PS it should not be a "right" to strike.
As soon as you strike your P45 should be handed to you!

Any more swearing an official warning will be issue, you have been told once in this thread.
