x22se or y22se for a swb 2001 petrol/lpg

Postby screwyuk on Mon Jun 09, 2008 12:56 am

My x22se was going to cost about £700-£800 to put right, new pistons rebore crank grind, oilpump etc,I wouldnt mind but what i have been reading about the x22se is that it is a short skirt piston and long bore does seem to suffer from piston slap, many of these are prone to throwing a conrod, well i have got 131000 miles on my gas frontera (i aint complaining)and the engine is rattling from cold till warm, because of the millage its time to think about fixing it, replacing it or go back to an astra.
Having decided that trying to get a second hand unit without a divorce (house keeping would suffer)i fancied the idea of rebore new pistons etc, until i discovered a y22se 2002 62000 miles on ebay for £350,so i bought it currently waiting for delivery.i have tried looking info and it seems like the frontera went y22se towards the end.
so in summary if it fits its going in,(wont be till end of month)be interested in some of your opinions.

y22se was introduced in the middle of 2000,i dont think there is much diffrence as most commponents eg timing belt kit,
sump gaskets and such like are the same as x22se also used in the vauxhall SINTRA. :D

OOOps this turned out to be a z22xe,back to the drawing board.....
A while ago i was talkin to an engine refurb guy from bedford, and he told me what the problem was with the x22se,
Firstly the piston sroke is a long one so they use short skirt pistons, and suffer from piston slap later on in life,
The piston slap was described as rattling which dissappeared when warm,
as well as being a very carbon producing engine they soot up oilways easily.
But i find the same explanation on here....
piston slap = eventually throw a conrod = GAME OVER !!

Well mine is also y22se and all the parts are the same for both engines from vauxhall so cant tell
you what the difrence is between the 2 engines as dosent seem to be any so the answer is yes
you will be able to fit an x22se in place of a y22se,maybe someone will be able to say what
the diffrence is but vauxhall couldnt as i asked when pricing the parts for mine. :D

Mainly cosmetic differences but as far as I know later engines use different bearing shells.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

Well when i phoned vauxhall all the bearings, pistons, rings, water pump, oil pump, and gaskets are all the same part numbers as x22se so dont think theres a diffrence there, but must be some diffrence someplace unless they just
used y22se to sound like they have made some inprovements to it and havent,as uptill now on stripping mine down
havent came across anything diffrent, but im just waiting on the parts now for the rebuild and some fancy tools
needed for the job so will keep ya all posted.

Now heres alittle something for you all to think about regarding engine codes and dates.....
I have just had delivered a x22se bargain £400 inc g/box 40,000 miles,
i found the engine numbers on the engine bellhousing rim exhaust side of engine.
My original engine in the car is suppose to be a y22se...registered 28/2/2001,
according to vauxhall :axe: service history i have documents to support "y22se"
having checked this location i find mine is a x22se!!!!
So i have the right beast and if this one dont rattle i'll be a happy chappy

This weekend was rather moist but it didnt stop me taking out the engine and box,got some new bits to go on the replacement engine starting with a new clutch kit i bought sometime ago from ebay £30,was advertised as a 2.2 16v clutch so i risked it,had a guy press off /press on the thrust bearing housing today so looking good so far....replacement engine seems to have some dribbles of oil coming from rocker gasket,is it normal for the breather tube from block to rocker box to leak, mine did on the original engine,i replaced the metal gasket with one i made from lino,it didnt stop it but reduced the oil loss,i checked the breathers and they looked clear so not sure what was going on.
Gave the engine bay and box sections, axle ,etc a lick of vactan, might help to slow down the rust......previous owner must have done skinny dipping in my fronty.
Weather permitting shall start install soon, and if all successful shall attend GWR.
.....Hoping to add aircon, currently negot with a guy for parts.

before you put the engine in, take the flywheel off and check the rear main ol seal, if any doubt, change it....it only costs bout 8 quid, and believe me it is easier to do now, than later, pulling propshafts off, and dropping the gearbox, and then for other leaks you might find that a tin of "wynns stop leak" from halfords for bout a fiver, will cur the rest. just pour the full tin into your engine oil and run it for a couple of thousand miles. i got no leaks at all now. but believe me about that rear seal. it was a pain. had to drop the gearbox, clutch and flywheel to get at it, and it didnt leak for first couple of weeks use.
