T plate will fall into the same tax band, so no nasty 4x4 tax rate.
Dunno about mpg, a nose in the 2.2tdi section may help there.
As with a lot of modern Diesels the fuel pump is serious money, again a nose in the 2.2dti section may help how to diagnose any issues there.
The 4x4 is operated by a button on the dash and can be used on the fly (not recomended for road use or speed) try and find a stretch of gravel and push button whilst moving slowly, 4x4 light should flash then stay lit, operate again it should flash and go out. Whilst in 4x4 you dont want to hear any clunks bangs etc. Try low ratio the gear knob to the right whilst in 4x4, again no bangs or clunks.
The dash on these has a habit of refusing to work, it can be bypassed on some by putting the lights on, make sure you look for this and unlike me look at it with sides on (sneaky seller).
look for any signs of 4x4 activities like scraped under tray's and chassis, always worth getting some cash knocked off for that.
If the tyres are unevenly inflated like at most forcourts it will wallow, its worth finding an airline and slip a good 36psi in all roaund and see if it makes adifference.
Others will add more model specific, but thats my 10p
