Painting is hard!

Painting is hard!I have completley buggered up the painting!
When I sanded down the rust spots I put masking tape around the area and then put 3 coats of primer on. Problem was that the coats were way to thick and now there is a ridge between the new primer and existing paintwork. Arse! Suppose I will just have to keep sanding until I get a smooth finish. On the plus side though, I am picking up a hard top and new drivers seat on Saturday. Something else for me to balls up on Sunday.
Re: Painting is hard!primer is only meant as an undercoat ....it's the colour that is built up over a few layers (thin coats over a few layers will get you the best end results)
Re: Painting is hard!Thanks Red,
Will try that. Should I mask around the area to be painted or just freehand? What about using a palm sander? The areas are reasonably large and it would speed things up a bit and give a more even finish?
Re: Painting is hard!mask it off but each time you rub down and add another coat move the masking tape back a bit, this way you dont get a ridge

Re: Painting is hard!Hiya,
Dont hard edge mask your primer if you dont want a build up. Best now to block it back so still covers your filled/rusted areas but taking the bulk of the orig paintwork. Then flat out/key all your paintwork p600 if doing base and clear or 400 if doing 2k.This should then cover ok. Then panel wipe down to get rid of any silicons and tack cloth off to get rid of any dust particles on the surface. Dont hard edge mask anything where you dont want a visable edge in the paint. Useful trick is to use 2" masking tape, roll it over backwards on itself so it makes a long tube with the sticky on the outside. Use this to mask in your shuts etc where you dont want a hard edge by gently sticking in around the shut. do not squash it down-it needs to retain its cylindrical shape to allow to paint to drift under, therefore not leaving pronounced lines where your painting finishes. If not painting original colour it is worth remembering that dark colours tend to show any infections in your prep than light colours. Also bear in mind that whites and reds are particularily prone to fading unless base and clear and will more difficult to match should you need to repaint anything at a later date. Just look at white or red cars under streetlights or petrol station lighting and you will immediately spot if any panels have been repainted. Hope this helps and good luck Gregster Check out the index thread below where pics/reviews from all our past meets can be found!!!!

Re: Painting is hard! Thanks for that gregster.
I bought myself an electric detail sander last night and set to work sanding down the ridges I had made. It went very well and I am quote pleased with the result so far. I will prime again tonight, taking on board all the tips, and hopefully get a first coat of colour on by Sunday. Will put some piccys of the various stages on soon. Cheers chaps.
