leaking diff

H can anyone tell me how easy it is to change a seal on a 2.2 petrol rear diff as mine is leaking and what tools i require

I'm assumeing that this is for a 2.2 petrol A series frontera ....also assuming that you have a new diff plate

you need a 12mm spanner/socket ...drain out old diff oil first ...

undo the several 12mm bolts around the edge of the plate .....clean off the mounting surface on the diff

apply red sealant to the surface (no gasket) wait for a few mins ...then put the new diff cover on and bolt it down ..

refill with new EP90 oil

If its just the diff cover plate then its an easy fix. Drain the diff, undow a few bolts, clean all the mating surfaces thoroughly, use some RED gasket sealant and tighten all the bolts up good. If the diff cover itself is leaking (as opposed to the gasket) then a new diff cover is about £55 (possibly + VAT) from VX.

If however the axle is leaking at the ends then new bearings/seals are required. These are, I think press fitted in and a pig to get out. There is a post about it somewhere, probably in the Axle section. Someone else will be along with a better idea then me though.

I had to replace the blue sealant on one of mine two weeks later as it leaked, so used the red stuff, sealed it a treat.

Scuse me if I'm being dense here, but why use red sealant instead of a proper gasket??

I ask, cos my diff plate's on the "things to do" list, hehe

It recommended buy VX , also I dont think there is a gasket for that seal

I use RTV Silicone sealer

If'n I can suss out a way to remove front and rear axles off my spare motor, then get what's left onto a trailer, I'll recon the diff on the back axle, paint everything up, and then fit it when the back end lift goes in
Just gotta work out how now, lol

Thanks you have all been a great help, just need to disable the alarm now as it goes off every 2 seconds/fix the heater if i can find the right relay hopefully and the jeeps in good nick
