Bit of a strange situation with our toyota avensis, would like some thoughts on. Its a 1.8vvti X reg with 80k on the clock. Runs sweet as a nut, starts straight up and returns close to 45mpg on a run, so to my mind the engine is sound. The thing is this, I checked the oil level today and nothing on the dip-stick which is worrying seeing as it was garage serviced 1000 miles ago. I drove slowly home and decided to drain the oil to see what came out, not even 1 litre came out and it was as black as night. Also the drain plug was only finger tight. It took 3.5 litres of oil to get it up to the correct level. Now I either have a very sick engine that has used 3.5L in under 1K miles, (no visible smoke on start up, driving or when reved hard), a serious oil leak (not a sign of a drop under the car) or someone has been working on it, got called away and then forgot where they were or do you guys have any ideas. If say only a litre of oil was put in would the engine have survived doing 1K miles?

Myself would say that someone did not put enough oil in it when serviced as i am sure you would have seen some oil dripping from underneath or a bit of smock as the oil was burnt ....

as long as the oil light did not come on you may have got away with no damage to the engine ....

best thing to do is keep checking the oil level every day or two to see if it goes down again ....

I think you have been lucky, I kniow this happened to someone else recently seems he was running on slick50 no oil, he replaced oil and its been fine

Yeah, going to check it daily, realy can't think it is anything other than human error. Will have to talk to the garage to see what they say. Just hope there is nothing wrong with the car.

Think your right in the human error thing then as you would have either a cloud of smoke or a trail of oil, you would have deffo noticed that much under the car.

Yep, if I change the oil and get a few drops on the drive it gets noticed, if you know what I mean , if there was 3.5litres on there I would be hanging from a tree and not by the neck

My sump plug is dripping about 4 drops a day and Im getting funny looks, so it will be fixed in the morning

Its deff human error, funny that the plug was only finger tight though????
I would go back and gee thum sum stick mate.
