Read quite a few posts on here re poor mpg.
There are a few things, which when you think about them are blindingly obvious.
wrong tyre pressures - each 1 psi out will reduce mileage by .4%
Dirty air filter - anything up to 10% reduction!
Oil needs changing/service needed - up to 5% reduction
Using lights / electrical equipment when not needed - up to 1% reduction
So lets say we have a car with tyre pressures 3psi low on each wheel = 4.8%
dirty air filter = 10%
Needs oil change and service = 5%
Running with headlights/heater/etc etc in daytime = 1%
You are now up to potentially 20.8 % reduction in MPG!
So if your car SHOULD do say 30 mpg, you are now down to less than 24 mpg!
