1st Time Off-Road

Postby ManCityPete on Thu May 08, 2008 6:39 pm

Ok... as a newbie I reserve the right to ask daft questions...

Tomorrow evening I am going off on my very first off road weekend. I'm going to the Wormhough 4x4 centre in Staffordshire. I have a totally standard 2.0l fronty sport, with the exception of some BFG mud tyres.

There are several people there who will be giving me guidance on driving techniques, etc, and I certainly won't be attempting anything crazy, but I thought it worthwhile asking you guys what kinds of things the fronty is good at off road, or conversely, what type of things I should avoid. I believe Wormhough is mostly a mud bath type place, with some water obstacles and so on, so for instance, how does a standard fronty cope going through water?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Pete

stay clear of water, its not about making the biggest splash, its all to easy at pay and play to lose cocentration and the next thing you will posting in the help section of how to fix this
do only wot you are comfortable with, drive slow in low box to get the feel of it, use the low box for control

if you want to tear ass about thats not a problem its only you who will bere the cost

You air intake is in your drivers wheel arch so be carefull, Ive moved mine to under my bonett on my 2.8 like this

Image

This is ok for a diesel as sucking warm air isnt an issue as it has to pass through an intercooler before reaching the engine.

This is what I did in my 20L sport

Image

It has a cold air feed from the grill and the original feed from the arch, that when offroad I sealed off the grill feed. This just raised the intake a bit more for peace of mind.

Both filters are K+N the 2.8 being a panel filter, I uses theses as they are less likely to turn to mush if they do get damp.

Check these links out.

http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/info/using4wdfaq.htm

And enjoy.

Oh dont worrry your 20L will get very hot in 4wd this is normal just make sure the temp stays out of the red.
And gently wash mud from the rad before the journey home.

You'll be surprised at what a Frontera can actually do.

Click the video link on my sig for some standard and mildly modified Fronteras either laning or playing.

Don't forget to take a camera and post us some photos on your return.

The bottom line though, is to enjoy yourself

Ok :D ... so that is a rush, isn't it!!!

I avoided the really deep stuff, and the loopy hillclimbs, and I didn't break it :D

Had a great weekend with Glossop 4x4 and the Romily 4x4 group at Wormhough, and yes, I was surprised what my car coped happily with. Other than the really deep water stuff, I did everything the Range Rovers were doing and didn't get stuck once. And there was me taking it easy first time out, and then I let my partner drive... she got the hang of it quicker than I did... biatch!

I did get some tame pictures which I will post, but I just wanted to say thanks for the all the advice.

I think my first mod will be getting some proper towing points on though, as I witnessed up close and personal what happens when the wrong type of towing point gives way. A Disco was stuck in a very deep mudhole, and a Rangy was trying to pull him out using a kinetic rope. My partner and I were standing about 30 feet away watching. The Rangy tow point literally came out when the rope was at full stretch, and 'shot' the Disco DEAD... the shackle when through the grill, through (destroying) the winch motor and through the radiator, bending the top cross member on the way... couple of inches higher and we'd have had a dead driver. Perhaps that's a salutory lesson on my first time out. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Anyway, now my wallets wondering just how quickly I am going to empty it on my Fronty!
