A series electrical problem.

Postby mpjbiker on Sun Apr 13, 2008 12:03 pm

Hi all, wonder if anyone can help? When I try to indicate right (96 2.8i swb), the indicators don't work, and I can hear a buzzing from the passenger footwell. I've taken off the trim panel, and there appears to be a mass of wiring and relays-the buzzing is coming from somewhere in there. Relay problem? If so, how do I find the problem and cure? All indicator bulbs work, and there is a towbar wired up, which works fine apart from the right indicator. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated, thanks!
Martin.

I had this a couple of weeks ago ( Its cropping up a bit on here latley ) I thought it was the relay in the passenger footwell turns out all I needed to do was squirt some WD40 into the steering cowling and it cleaned the connectors, buzzing noise went away after a day and hasnt returned since. :D

I started to have the same problem that the hazards would always work, but occasionaly the right indicator would pack up, then the left one.
I tried the WD40 down the stalk & that worked for a while.
Bought a new relay today which didn't cure the problem.
Tonight I took the steering wheel off & the cowling. Behind the plastic ring I could just make out the brass contacts, which were black. I got some cotton buds & meths and gave the contacts a wipe. Then with a flat tip swiss needle file I carefully cleaned away the contact tips.
Jobs a good un & it gave me a chance to clean all the other c**p that got stuck under the steering column :P

Could also be a loose relay, in the front passenger footwell, there is a black relay, closest to the door frame, you will have to look up and under if you know what I mean, it has 'flasher' written on it, remove it and bend the pins slightly so it makes better contact in the socket. job was a goodun for me.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!
