Cue a link to the Beginners Day laining trip I ran, featuring a clean white LWB with a grey bit on the bonnet:

As for mods, deffo go with some good tyres, shouldn't affect the insurance, can get new shocks fitted it it hasn't had any done then that alone can lift abount 1" or so. Mine is a LWB and for laning the things I have done are
1) Decent set of tyres
2) Got steel belly plates (mines a B series so A series seem OK)
3) Got a CB so can talk to the others in the group now.
4) Got in with the guys on here and have been out laning 3 time now and still learning a lot.

Thing I would like to do are lift, but there is the prob of doing a lot of other miles than the few laning so staying as is at the moment, pos bit lift with torsion bars.
Raise the air intake some how, snorkel or move teh air intake some how, but be removable so can go back to standard as reqd.

I think you need to look at insuring the beast before you get too carried away.
My son is 19, got two years ncb & i cant add him to my policy!
His own insurance will cover him to drive it with third party only cover, but he cant get full cover for a 4x4 until hes at least 21.

You may need to start with something smaller like a Suzuki SJ before progressing into a Fronty.....even then it will need to have rear seats and be pretty standard.
What have I told you about Thinking Erroll??

ok have you tried lv provinding he has a good clean liscence etc i mean is i can get insured by a few different insurance comps tpft for 2,700 ish with no ncb no previous driving experience only thing that makes a good difference is a cat 1/2 alarm then maybe if i need to ( do my pass plus only if i need to ) but your son being 19 with 2yrs ncb on his own polcy should drop it to around 1600 of not drop it even more
but what im thinking is buy the car for around 800 quid mark 1k most then put down either 800-1k quid on the insurance then have to pay just 1600-1500 quid dependant on what happens between now and then
