Waterproofing a petrol

Apart from the obligatory snorkel and diff breather extensions, what extra little tricks are there to improve a petrol powered engines hate of water!
For example,we all use wd40 or similar on the leckies but is there one product which really helps keep the moisture out and what about a condom for the dizzy? :D

Theres the rubber golve trick with each lead coming out of a finger. Then zip tie the ends up.
Good dollops of grease on battery terminals, same for alternator terminals.
Fronty no.4, pimp mobile Treg 3.2 LWB lifted 2.5"

Fronty no.5 2.8 swb hd coils +2" 31"machos.

Silicone spray works for me :wink:

Ive also just took up the plastic kick plates on the sill and silicone gelled behind them and part way up the door behind the seals, I always thought the seals where weak but it turns out the water was getting under the plastic kick plate, so another job done :D


This is supposed to be effective, but a bugger to See where your going :lol:

any hoo...this is what i do...

seal air box fully with sillicon sealer(inc little hole under air filter)
grease up electical connectors
clean dissy-and seal up with sillicon or old push bike inner tube(400x8 wheel barrow is good)
grease up battery
spray on 1ltr of wd40/duck oil/sillicon spray...all over the engine
....and the MOST thing of value.......

........................ a LONG tow rope FRONT and REAR :wink: :wink: :wink:

oh just one thing ......
just as you start the engine,get out and check under the bonnet,then and ONLY then....chuck yer brain away....you dont need it where your going!!! :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

if you need ANY help just go to FARLEY QUARRY...look for the big group with camaras and videos etc......

and i'll be the one in the middle there all laugthing at :oh yer: :oh yer: :oh yer: :oh yer:

Interesting.

Only problem I ever had with water was my old mini.

I used wet seal spray which sets semi hard and therefore is supposed to keep moisture out of the leccy system and the ign leads etc.

Only thing is it cracks with heat and time and so it sucks in water which gets trapped and you have real problems now because everything is covered in this plasticy sealer. Not fun.

If you want to do it properly, first get under the bonnet as clean as possible. This means when you apply things as below it will stick to the components and not dirt which then can fall off. THen let it get VERY dried out. If unsure pay a professional to steam clean it properly.

Then physical protection - and I always was toild never to use silicone on a car - that it can have problems. Anyone see their bath or shower leak because the sillycone has come adrift? Bingo. I was told always to use Polyurethane sealant - works the same but sticks more firmly and flexes more before giving up, buy it in a good factors. MAybe someone feels differently / the same?

Seal up the airbox etc, watch out for the bulkhead grommets - I was missing a few and water in the car is not only unpleasant but can cause damage to major things. Rubber glove trick is an old one - might try it on the 2.4. i would not use adhesive sealants on this sort of component though. Too much heat and too messy to roadside repair.

So like the others say, I use spray grease on all leccy connections and battery terminals.

I then cover the engine etc in Autoglym Rubber cleaner. It's like tyre sheen and is expensive, only available by the gallon but it is a great repellant and smells lurvely. Armour all or Son of a gun works just as well. It has the added benefit of being runny so it gets into the same places the water could, only it gets in first. Also it treats and feeds rubber hoses, edges of gaskets, grommets and other important things - making them last longer before cracking.

Lastly I soak the area in WD40. I know there are many other products out there, but it is very well known and very easy to get - and I'm a sheep in a shop.

If going into mud, pop the bonnet and cover the lot in WD40 beforehand and at every chance you get. It's cheap and it might save you some paddling. Or swimming.

I've never had solid advice about exhaust and wading though - be interested to hear any thoughts there.
