Millions of drivers of sports cars and 4x4s face hefty charges to park outside their own homes under a scheme being pioneered by a local council.

Town hall chiefs across the country were said last night to be closely watching a move by Liberal Democrats in Richmond upon Thames, south-west London, to target the owners of so-called "gas-guzzlers

The borough wants to introduce a sliding scale of charges for residents' parking linked to the emissions of the vehicle. Owners of electric cars would pay nothing, but someone driving a people carrier or high-performance vehicle would have to hand over £300.

Phew they could never do that to us as we are a little co operative and we the residents as the co op own the parking spaces

Yet another rip off in the name of global warming.
Why all the fuss about these "gas guzzlers" a lot of 4x4 vehicles etc do not cover anywhere near as many miles as most everyday runabouts so although they may well have a higher carbon footprint,a smaller car covering more mileage will have just the same if not even more.
To try and impose another tax on people parking outside their homes based on what vehicle they choose to drive is nothing short of criminal and if they go ahead then the UK is way overdue for a revolution.-John
