Glad I picked the Frontera over the trooper now. Preferred the body shape when I first saw it and was seriously considering the trooper as an alternative at the time. No rust or rot anywhere on mine yet. Im touching some serious wood now!
I have a 1995 trooper SWB, a 1996 Fronty SWB and a 1999 fronty LWB(the only one that is roadworthy is the 1996 fronty)
The trooper is great off road but cant be driven on the road as the body to chasis mounts are rotten hence no mot. The 1996 fronty is very similar to the trooper in handling and the basic layout of the dash controlls (not great) Not sure about he later Troopers, but dont go for the 3.0.......

the trooper 3.0 flywheel fits the frontera engine when coupled with the gearbox and spacer bracket. it is the SAME fly as the frontera 2.8
i personally have fitted a isuzu 2.8 fly, ditched the spacer plate and extended the prop by 2 1/4 inches. use the isuzu 2.8 front prop straight swap. Cost me about
i own a 3.1 trooper and a 2.8 frontera and personally the trooper is a far better vehicle inside, spacious and comfy. The frontera is cramped in comparison and doesnt have the luxuries of the isuzu. But the fronteras economy far outweighs the troopers about 33 to 28 in comparison.
im in the process of swapping out the 3.1 to fit a 2.8 just to gain economy as i do a lot of miles. ill have a cracking 3.1 going cheap if anyones interested
Just another thoughtCheers

There are good and bad examples of all all models of vehicles out there. If you are not under pressure take your time and look at plenty of cars to find the one in the right condition for you. I have a 3.2 monty and a 2.0 swb fronty. The fronty is used as a work van and is off road most days in the woods where the swb is a bonus for manouverability. The basic mechanics are a plus but my only regret was not realising that a 2.8 swb was available. The monty gets used for long trips and as a family car. It is so comfy as the seating is more armchair and less car like. The higher roof makes it airey and with the seats down you can cram some stuff in. The obvious solution to any rust issue is not to buy a rusty one. An import bighorn from Japan is less likely to have been exposed to road salt but as said before you can pick up a monty cheaper than a trooper simply because people prefer the Isuzu badge.
