if you cut a hole in the boot floor ....you will have to make a plate to cover the hole ..and have a good seal which could work out awkard as the boot floor is coragated
in my opinion it's best to re-tap the original fixing points

Not sure that I understand the full topography of the problem - but it would seem that attacking the welds to the body/chassis rather than the tank would be the way to go. Then discard these makeshift brackets without hurting the tank, and retapping the original lugs/brackets...
Probably easier said....
Why can't people do it right the first time eh! arghhh... Quite often it's no harder to do it right than make a right b*lls up.

the tank itself is plastic ....and it sits in a "bucket" type cradle which is bolted to the chassis rails
