So just where can i go greenlaning?

hey all

I am just getting a little confused as to where you are legally permitted to drive 4x4's in my area, i have read up and now know that BOATs are a yes (unless signposted) and routes with other access are a maybe depending on signage etc so armed with this knowledge, i bought some ordinance survey maps and began searching, simply put, there arent any! i managed to find one little stretch with no clear byways to or from it, and it was miles away from me! now having looked on various 4x4 forums and websites, it is clear that there are open roads for 4x4's around, one of which is between grosmont and levisham up on the moors, though looking at the OS maps, i cant see one, only footpaths and bridleways, the same applies to a village called wetwang, has been noted there is a green lane here, yet does not appear on the OS map, or any other online maps i have come across

Is their anyone in the malton / york / scarborough area that has any local knowledge? the best i can find are 2 fords in a local village!

Cheers all

You ain't looking for the right symbols on the map. There's a hole bunch of lanes in your neck of the woods. Mostly UCR's. depending which maps you have the symbol colour differs but basically you need to find strings of dots or crosses which will be red on the pink cover maps or green if you got Orange cover maps (I can't remember the scales off the top of my head).

Just north of Malton is a place called Gilmour (spelling ?) from there going NNW is Rudland Rigg which is a UCR

In fact a group of us are coming up for a long week ends laning in May, we have 3 routes planned covering circa 100 miles a day.
Remember, keep the greasy side down!

That lane looks a belter! Can you remember roughly where it starts? I have 2 OS maps to guide me, I just have no idea where to look!

That trip was back in 2007, so I cant verify that the lanes are still legal to drive - check with the local Council or GLASS Area Representative

A couple of locations to search for on the OS map:

Rudland Rigg - the long lane (http://binged.it/1z1Ne8W)
Battersby Plantation - the rocky climb I think (http://binged.it/1GkfTDw)

and a set of start/end OS coordinates:

NZ 786 069 - NZ 778 065
NZ 772 088 - NZ 735 092
NZ 610 069 - NZ 598 096
NZ 592 061 - SE 659 926
SE 625 980 - SE 640 974

Do check the legality of the lanes before you go though, and don't go alone (basic laning safety)

If you've not done so yet, have a read of this: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=971
