Mediterranian - Vacation in S a r d i n i aHi Folks,
last weekend we finished our vacation to italy and want to provide a few impressions here. As we did no serious playin' during the annual meet with our vacation so close, we are pleased to report that 'Godzilla' with a new radiator and fresh brakes in the front has showed no problems during this trip of 4.500km - except a little noise from the front axle we eliminated with marine liquid spray and now some rattling noise from the exhaust (cat)?! Still on a German motorway: A pre-series car from Stuttgart (probably the new GL?) Before embarging the ferry we found a good use for the sidesteps: As bistro! Another ferry took us to an island between S. and C o r s i c a Impressions from L a M a d d a l e n a View from the bridge to C a p r e r a Back on the mainland Famous town with castle B * O * S * A Little technical work beneath the tent - Lubrication Our neighbours This village was used for some Western movies, e.g. with Clint Eastwood No - we didn't drove through. Only pushed back a few meters... This amount of mud was the only one for nearly three weeks! In fact, we only had rain two times, but with 30°C the ground went dry again in minutes... Ancient Roman bridge Reconstructed old houses of shepards An actual Isuzu?! Water has gone here for maintanance of the retaining wall Last day on the way to the ferry, fully loaded but open! PLASE POST COMMENTS here: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=44147 Perhaps I want to add some information here later, as my slides are still to come, this are only some pics of the small digital camera... Thanks! Kind regards,

Re: Mediterranian - Vacation in S a r d i n i aAnother short visit - the chance of cheap flights will end some day...
Great track, but definitly the wrong car... Sadly there has been a bushfire in the neighbourhood a week before - watch the post under the car For that reason they got those stunning trucks now... ...and for God's sake some rain. But why the h**** a little creek under our tent? Someone interested in my antique camera... Met really nice people with interesting truck And seen a solution for a winch-on-demand... And again, PLASE POST COMMENTS here: http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=44147 Perhaps I want to add some information here later... Kind regards,

Re: Mediterranian - Vacation in S a r d i n i aThis year we had another nice vacation, GodZilla took us to beautiful places and we had a great time!
PLEASE POST COMMENTS here: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=44147 Our first goal was the Mille Miglia 2012. At Casalmaggiore we found a cheap and good Hotel - ten minutes by feet away from the main road. It is very impressive to watch these cars like an old Bentley passing the normal traffic, using the wrong lane and all oncoming trafic is pushed to the side... All these people at the street, everyone has fun - Great! We met Lukas, a truckdriver from Germany and have been invited by friendly guas at the local Citroen-dealer to fresh Lambrusko Vine, CHeese and Ham from Parma. So I did oversleep the earthquake during the following night. When the Mrs. told me aboutthat in the morning and we heard the (bad) news we felt very awkward. In Italy you should not stay in bed during an earthquake...... We travel further to Canossa. Sadly, it kept on raining during the next days. So we got some mud (Fango!) at the normally quite dry island. Unused with this circumstances, we had to stopo in some areas, as wet stones on a lane at a steep hill or muddy lanes near a cliff are not that good when you are on your own! Luckily, we managed to turn around without going down! Rain is followed by sunshine.. As usual - uninvited guests: BTW:If you need a thingy to lubricate the cross joints, that means in Italian STAMPA DI GRASSO. PLEASE POST COMMENTS here: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=44147 Kind regards,

YES, we did another trip with our tent! Without Frontera. As RYANNAir still has those restrictions in handluggage... We got this for my pleasure: This year we succeeded in booking the "Y", not an upgrade as usual, when the crowd at the counter of the car rental has vanished Some roads are closed and will not got repaired some are contaminated (Mil Zone - Radioactive Material) grr Some impressions of the tours... Obviously are signs unimportant due to satnav... Griffon! Green Oval! Heron! Lizard! Don't mind the size - Seen on Panda 4x4. Downsizing is en vogue As usual - guests for dinner PLEASE POST COMMENTS here: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=44147 Kind regards,

Re: Mediterranian - Vacation in S a r d i n i aHello,
back again from an extraordinary vacation to Italy. As our truck GodZilla seemed to be well prepared with an inspection and fresh timing belt & fluids, the problems with the rear diff cover (after market) remained and the air breather kept leaking oil! We did not want to have a break down of the rear diff, so we decided to take the now famous Greenstripe for the trip. She took us to merry old England and back to Germany. Sardinia is an island as well - so what's the difference? The broken and shortened hose to the radiator was doing fine the last few hundred kilometers... Foul weather near the blackwood forest in the south of Germany. Stop for the night near Freiburg. Next morning rushing through Switzerland. The oilleak was stopped by a magnifying fluid (doing fine for app 5000 km). As the traffic news mentioned a queue in front of the Gotthard tunnel, we decided to do a little curve around and take the little St Bernhards. There was still snow beside the road. Next stop was Fiorano bei Modena as we wanted to attend a concert. Finding a hotel was easy and we had a short walk downtown. But the stage was moved... and Tazenda - a band from Sardinia - had their gig in a theater, due to the rain. Next morning we looked around the sights of Fiorano. The church Parrocchia Di San Giovanni Battista… … has a fascinating adress Joh. Paul II – statue on a place named after him. Typical landscape north Fiorano - Emilia Romana Villa Clotilde with a well cared garden. Vignola near Modena - Rocca di Vignola But we wanted to go for tuscany, so we added this to our todo list... Volterra. This was not our one nad only visit. So many things and places to see... Tuskany - as in the ads. Truck level on the carferry from Livorno to Golfo Aranchi The ferry has been half empty. We speculated of the crisis, fuel and ferry costs. Three years earlier there were hot offers as bargain prices, now these costs have more than doubled. Monti - shopping for the daily needs and some "housekeeping"! Ala dei Sardi - On the way to the ruins of Sos Nurattolos, a vilage of the bronze age. Near Mores an ancient bridge of roman times. What does this mean - Fine Strada Asphalto? Strada Bianca or Green Lane SatNav noticed „not digitalized“ – as we came to a quiet oasis in the middle of nowhere. Neverever had a chance to sit in such a thing till now Bosa! Bosa Marina – lying on the river mouth of Temo, was called Terrida by the ancient romans. This tower has been erected by the Spains during their domination. manhunt poster Bar at the hotel – the landlord owns a Range Rover… We became a member. What car is this? Yep, a Pickup... Fabrication Gonow. Camping Nurapolis Peninsula Sinis - Beach view direction south. Weather still changing, some rain, cold. Like weather at Sibbertoft... Cuglieri - yearly stop for our oil of olive in cans. Then we found a lane looking promising... . This trail to Monte Ferru was very nice: We have seen Mufflone (wild sheep) - of course no chance of getting a pic of these. The lane was very narrow, the hose at the thermostat loosen. Have to sorten this. San Leonardo - Blessing with some holy water. Maybe you know this mineral water as "Siete Fuentes"soled worldwide. So we looked for a garage to get help with the hose... … but they couldn't help us at Oristano. So the cat... and jay are getting irrated... as Ian takes care of some improvisation. Angle 90° replaced with some copper tube. This kept the truck rollin' and we could do some trips around leaving bad lanes out: Basilika St. Giusta near Oristano St Giusta Statue Notice the different coloumns: Taken from the ruins of Tharros, these are from different ancient people: phoenician, etruskian and roman... Fordingianus: ancient roman thermal bath on a hot fountain. Might it be that sulfur does any harm to the radiator or the engine? Lake of Fiume Tirso near Busachi. Except one lake all sardinian lakes are reservoires. This has several levels. Evolution step one of a provincial road for off roaders? St. Cristina - 3000 years ago a inhabited area Nuraghe - old as the pyramids Holy fountain. Twice a year the sunlight aims through the ceiling on the water. There must have been visitors - I want to believe, Agent Mulder... Red wine of Contini's - only some bottles... We need a bigger truck! Getting to the eastern coast crossing the island: Strada Bianca with underpass In the mountains again again some correction of the water level Province Ogliastra Eastern coast Camping Telis sunset Pedra Longa Conversion of the conversion – trying to sharpen the copper to make stop the hose slipping down Now the hose is still very tight - and the remains are more and more rotten. A cause of sulfur? This witness doesn't know an answer to this question… Baunei Murales in development Local Rammstein-Fan gives a hint for a garage which might help But at Fiat/Alfa they renovated and only accepted high priority clients – Carabinieri, Guardia Finanzia and Polizia… German AA was no help at all. Thanks to greg for communication and his efforts! At least a friend donated a contact to a lokal workshop. Look at this So we took the lane to the valley of Codula Sisine - wanted this for years. Golgo - Piscine with pig Baunei - honey of local production Poster advertising an OffRoad event for women old oven old cars old kitchen On a weekend during summer the old houses are opened for visitors to show ancient style of living and traditions. At least, most houses have been left during the seventies or early eighties of the last century... Schlampe is German and means bitch South of Tortoli River near Cardedu no coming through South of Lanusei what a practical truck! Arbatax - view to Golfo di Orosei Forest north of Arzana This old station is now a bar - runed by a local friend Observatory Lanusei on 1000m above NN Torre di Bari – picture taken an hour later Valley near Ilbono Above Talana The evening before departure we noticed som fuel smell at the back of the truck! Rotten fuel line (backflow). Next morning our new friends got this sorted as well. At the harbour Caution: This is tight, I say... Supper Rotten Fuel Pipe... Sorted forthe moment with some glue and rubber strips Hope you enjoyed the piccies! Preparing the next trip... Kind regards,

Re: Mediterranian - Vacation in S a r d i n i aMay/June 2014
Left Home with KMage 208.300 - End of 1st day as usual between Freiburg and Basel for an overnight. The rotten fuel pipe did not make it so far and we got support by the ADAC... ... who managed to arrange a date at a workshop for Volkswagen for a few minutes of welding on a Saturday morning: Meanwhile Marion did some sight seeing. Beside the motorway traveling is much smoother. In switzerland passing Lake of Genova and Montreux... ... up the mountain and to Italy taking the "Great Sankt Bernhard Route" following the valley of Aosta into the plain of river Po - next overnight in Fontanetto Po. Very little place, followed just a little sign "Albergo" leading away from the main road. Very tiny and tidy hotel with a very good restaurant for supper. Seemes to have found new friends as the fare for the room changed trough the evening from 50 down to 28 euros... Rice, rice, rice and rice - everywhere you look! At Casale Monferrato viewed some churches, found the old man with the white beard. Unmarked police FIAT. Sunday ride of Motorbike-Veterans-Club Chiavari of Liguria spotted 3rd night of vacation on the ferry Livorno - Golfo Aranchi. Shortly after arrival we realized some destruction of winter storms! Closed road behind Olbia Ethnographic Museum of Aggius Typical kitchen of a sardinian house - up to the 60/70s Camping site Nurapolis near Narbolia as basic camp chosen and relaxed in a forest of pines. A bit disturbed by some news of a local magazine: Quelle: L Unione Some fellas decided to steal a car and put it on fire in the neighbourhood. A passing driver tried to treat the flames with his exstinguisher, but a yelling from some bushes made him flee: "Pi** off, or we will shoot you!" We visited some old friends and made new friendships, got wine and olive's oil for home's stock. We liked to go with the MTs, but the Italian government did a law in January wich strictly forbides the use of winter tyres with speed index Q and lower between May and October. As the AT have the required speedo index, we have been on the safe side. Our friend with the Range is not very upset, as the local authoryties are told to ignore this with 4x4 vehicles. But tell this a guy from the polizia stradale on a motorway around Milan! Some other "sinners" with M+S during summer - TzTzTz! Got a nice sun shield, as bikini tops for fronteras are not available. Our friend felt like traveling in the PAPAMOBILE... The girl on the left jumped first into the water. Boys are a little shy here... Comparing Gonow - Isuzu-Bedford Corp. Frontera As temperatures have not been below 30° C during daytime, we decided to leave the roof down, even with a fully packed truck during our drive to the eastern coast! City of Ottana, famous for their carneval. Another one with the wrong tyres? Met some guys from France with their Service-Truck, ATV Rallye Fountain of Su Gologone, exit of a underwater cave, emitting fresh water 300L/sec! Feeding four times a day, please! Railroad - Trenino Verde, Arbatax. During the main season with a steam engine as well. Coming from happy cows: Mountain of Oline near Talana Foul weather on the day of departure - at least our third day with some rain! Very hard in the mountains, very dangerous for motorbikers. Calming view from the ferry in the evening Arriving at home after three weeks at KM 212.400. Technically at the truck no further faults! Sadly I have to report Marion fell down on Friday, the 13th of course and broke two rips... Have a nice and healthy summer to everybody! Kind regards,

Oooops - we did it again! (Britney Spears) By a sudden there were two weeks off, weather at home was foul and cold and we decided to pack our bags and boxes, threw them into Godzilla an went off heading south. Switzerland, Gotthard's traffic-jam caused by roadworks. Motorway was jammed as well... Top of the mountain (Kate Bush) View of the old track. We will take this one another time if - brakes are in better condition (need new pads now after being back home) - we have enough time left heading to the ferry in Italy - I want to scratch some curves Autostrada A 15 Parma dir. La Spezia At Livorno. First by leaving the car a good shelter against mosquitos is essential. The vessel arrived with a short delay of nearly 2 hours - we have been informed before via SMS. The cause was described as "for operating reasons" turned out on the sea as some bad weather with heavy wind, more waves than usual and a bit wetness... After arrival we headed directly to Tortoli / Arbatax, friends were waiting. A new lane as a bypass through a nearly dry river. Good for us, poor for caravans and mobile homes. TOUR Monte Ferru With assistance by a booklet for endures we found some lanes through the mountains I was keen for years: The way to the top (app half a mile) was too steep for our Frontera occupied with three people. Put it in low gear, but caused by the automatical hubs it was difficult as the road was filled with concrete... We turned and went downhill again when a Defender simply passed by! Maybe without the 220 pds of our friend... So further round the mountain. View north to Gulf of Orsoei, the peninsula of Arbatax with 'our' campsite, a harbour, shipyard and railwaystation. The name 'Arbatax' comes from arab language and means the 14th - related to the watchtower of the Saracens. In the following picture you can see another one at the coastline as little with spot. View to the south - Mountains of Quirra. Mostly rerstricted area belonging to the military. Lots of rockets on the ground of the sea and parts of tank-destroying material polluting the countryside with radioactivity. Sheeps with two heads and other birth-given defects are not rare... While reading a Italian 4x4 magazine I found an article about Fronteras and found out that my coke had a crash before. A sign...??? Guests for supper [img]http://up.picr.de/19535132vn.jpg[/img This time we spotted even more 4x4, some shurely on their way to Africa. Hazardous goods the Italian way. TOUR Monte Idolo bei Arzana An angel's statue on the top Upper Flumendosa Lake. All the landscape belonging to the village of Arzana. Without a guide and unavailable detailed maps (most are based upon data of the U.S. military created during WWII !) and our SatNav saying: Not digitalized we decided to try the way to the lake next year. TOUR Pedra Longa This bar was expanded last year by these neat terraces. Service there requires a raised fee of 10% more. As I had food and drinks for 6€ it was worth the 60 cent! A little party with some neighbours... ... some of them still were knocked off the other day! No alcohol for the kitties!!! Special barbecue motor made of old spares of a car. Wich one? Who cares - it works. And guest for the night. M. plays MAMA TEMBO and this is the result. TOUR zur CALA SISINE Last year with Grünstreifen, this time with Godzilla as we had a passenger - our white Frontera is lacking the passenger seat in the back. The last 1,5 mile has to be done by foot. Anyone who goes by car or motorbike without permission has to pay 800€! Vie north to Cala Gonone During the way back we had to make place for a Defender of the local Police and a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport of the Mountainrescue, coming with siren and blue light. Sadly, no time for a picky. "Stagno" of Tortoli, no breeding of tyres but of fish. This arrived last year by mail after we had left: In Lotzorai there is some old church Supper on the ferry heading back home Me in my hammock Bilanz: Start km 214230 Finish km 217380 Fuelconsumption average 10,3 Liter per 100km, not that bad Technical failure a hanging 'sky' and a broken mat below the seat. Repaired by a cutting board for less than 5€ - done in a minute. PLASE POST COMMENTS here: forums/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=44147 Kind regards,
