If you have a smart phone go for Copilot Live, is only about £20 and it will always be with you.
It is well loaded with the latest features.
Other than that I have only used Tomtom and found that okay.

you can get one of the latest tomtoms with free lifetime map updates from halfrauds, these work pretty good but updates are now web based unlike older tomtoms that are windows based(fat32) garmin are junk in my opinion and on a few occasions the garmin nuvi has sent me miles out the way,one time it sent me 5.2 miles into the middle of knowhere,i then got my backup tomtom out which is a very old tomtom one(fully updated) and that got me to the exact spot,i drive every day for a living delivering to houses all over the uk so my satnav is an important bit of kit, both tomtom(old) tomtom(new) and the garmins lag out when they have been on for hours on end but a simple reboot cures the problem,i use google maps on my android phone for when my tomtom cant find a dodgy postcode or new build, this has got me out of trouble many times, dont waste your time with any android app as your main device as you loose connection all the time, there isnt any provider that covers all the uk without failing, plus android apps dont just use gps they use data too so it cost's to run them.my view is tomtom are much better than garmin, at the moment we use a new tomtom start 60/tomtom xxl/tomtom one v3 all fully updated and work pretty good, the garmin nuvi and a navman have been given there p45,if you want a really good satnav then get a snooper

I vote garmin all day long. They use the same company for there maps as google (and lets face it, when is google maps wrong, very rarly) tomtom use some weird company and are truley rubbish for postcodes. In fact the only thing tomtoms have going for them is the ability to plan a route before you set off. Other than that they are unreliable, customer service if your lucky and way over priced. Garmins are much more sturdy on there feet, There programers dont "forget" about leap years like tomtom did last year and they answer the phone when you call them. Plus you get alot for your money such as free life time maps, on some models you get voice control which is amazing, ask it to take you to the nearest McD's and it will lol. However that all said.....I personaly just use google navigate....its google so I know the maps are good, its free (cant get any better than that) and it works. I use it for my deliveries only uses about 100mb a month so not really damaging my 750mb internet allowance.

there are only two map providers and that's navteq and tele atlas, navteq is said to work better in the US and tele atlas works better in the uk,google use to use navteq then switched to tele atlas,in the states google are now going it alone and doing there own thing but as far as I know they are still using tele atlas in the uk,garmin uses navteq and tomtom uses tele atlas as does google. have a read here http://searchengineland.com/no-more-tel ... data-27584

I'd vote Garmin.

Garmin have been in the mapping trade long before Tom Tom was ever invented as they have been doing Marine GPS systems for years. I vote Garmin!!!!

even garmin know that tomtoms mapping system(tele atlas) is better than navteq, thats why they tried to buy into tele atlas in 2007 but where out bid by tomtom, theres not a great deal between them for the average user although tomtom is more customizable with voices/poi/mapshare ect,i also find the graphics on the garmin looks like a kiddies toy, biggest thing for me though is the fact the garmin does not see some small roads that are there but even an old tomtom can see them, none are perfect though
