Re: Omg just bought a latheMany many years ago I learnt to turn wood but I liked and was also rubbish at turning metal on a lathe when I had a go but its kinda satisfying when it turns out right (no pun lol)
Practice and maybe a local night collage for a few weeks Ste

Re: Omg just bought a latheLol gonna take it slow. Have some bits of ally to practice on first off.
It's an old one called a super relm. About 1920's from reading on the net. Bearings seem ok which is good. Got to try and drag it out the back in a mo "ouch me back" Alan

Re: Omg just bought a latheI use old frontera torsion bars for moving heavy stuff where I cant get the forklift...but any thickwalled tubing or round bar will do the jobbie.
Move it like the Romans used to...3 bars or tubes is ideal...2 under the load and one thats just come out and thats ready to go back in the other end. Surprisingly easy it is. Even if the grounds a bit uneven and the bars wont roll, the load will slide easy on top of them. Check out the index thread below where pics/reviews from all our past meets can be found!!!!

Re: Omg just bought a latheIf you need something done quickly just ask a busy woman then get the f"k out of her way.
Re: Omg just bought a latheOoo, I'd love to have a lathe in my garage (I'd need to get power there first though)
Having done a 4 year apprenticeship with Lucas Electrical Ltd, I found myself a full time job as a turner at Great King Street in Birmingam - for 7 years, on an old Dean Smith & Grace - something like this: ![]() Fond memories - I love the smell of suds oil Lawrence
Re: Omg just bought a latheWell done young man:
When you have got used to it, you will wonder how you ever managed without it: As Mentioned,,, Remove the chuck key, put your eye out mate: Once again Well Done:
Re: Omg just bought a latheWell managed to get the legs and motor out on my own and also the drip tray. No chance of lifting the main bed though so got everything set up in the garage where I wanted it and then got a mate round to give me a hand. The leather style drive belt didn't travel well so I had to reattach the claws again.
Up and working now though ![]() Alan

Re: Omg just bought a latheGot a brief lesson from a friend on how to set it up with the tooling etc. well chuffed though as I made all the gearbox spacers this weekend
I also got a metal cutting blade for my little bandsaw £7 bargain. Much easier than vice and hacksaw. Have some mirror brackets to turn next. Really enjoying playing with it and watching the raw metal turn into what I need. Awesome. Ok I'll never be an engineer but still a nice sense of achievement Cheers Alan Alan
