Spanner party on Friday at the annual

Spanner party on Friday at the annual

Postby BadBoy on Sun Apr 29, 2012 5:23 pm

I feel embarrassed to ask this as most will want to be  ing and this weekend is meant to be a social event, but I need urgent help sorting out my hand brake.
Due to the laning on Saturday, would anyone we willing to assist in setting up and checking my hand brake on Friday afternoon.

I replaced the disc/drums, pads, and shoes the other day with new parts, and the cables with good 2nd hand ones and we tried following the book of lies but it still doesn't want to work.

Happy to supply :drink: if we can get them working

Yes from memory we had it set up so that the shoes were just biting with the hand brake off and the rear axle in the air....but the handbrake pulled up somthing like 7 or 8 clicks and the truck still rolled down the hill.....we ran out of time to keep playing with it - Unless paul has had another go at it since...??

If the cable has been changed it will also need adjusting at the handle end, there are two options, one the adjuster under the car and one inside

I recently replaced mine too, this may not be much help but i just kept adjusting the adjuster (technical term) at the point where the cables meet the handbrake under the car until i had about 3 or 4 clicks on the handbrake inside the car.......sounds to me like you are nearly there and that you just need to keep adjusting said adjuster.

Wont be there till around 7 but happy to help if help still required.

TBH the car hasn't moved since I got home that day.

Interested on this other adjuster inside the car :?
Done the one in the brakes, and wound the one on the hand brake up too. Made no little to no difference.

Only other thing i can think of is, if its not connected right inside the rear drums !!!!

But hopefully its the interior adjustment that will do the job, didnt know of this one and will wait with anticipation.

I'll bring the 'tool' (bit of bent stuff for spinning the manual adjuster in the drum, amazingly it actually works).

2.8 Handbrake is easy. Now if you can get the truck from your gaff to mine I'll do it this week as I'm on leave for the next two weeks. Up to you.

I assume you have the right cables going to the hubs as they changed them halway through the production run, well they did with the 2.8 lwb's as I found out...
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

Comments on 'O-no' the truck may be left here

Paul, if you've fitted all up inside the handbrake drum the rest is a doddle. Undo the lock nut and adjusting nut at the lever end of the cables. Will the wheels in the air (remove the rubber gromets) spin the adjuster (through the grommet hole) until the shoes are out tight against the drums, back them off a few clicks so that the wheels turn then pump the handbrake lever up and down (you might have to do the adjuster nut up a bit so the cables are pulled each time you pull the lever), this shuffles the shoes so that they are in the optimum position (slacken the cable adjuster nut if you wound it up).

Go Back to the shoe adjuster and spin it to adjust the soes out against the drum again. Back the adjuster off until the wheel turns freely with maybe just a whisper of shoe to drum contact. Wind up the cable adjuster nut adjuster until the shoes to drum contact becomes more than a whisper, pump the lever up and down to settle everything out and recheck the whisper. wind the cable adjuster on/off until you get to the slight whisper/ free running point then nip the lock nut up.

At 3 clicks the wheel should be binding but still turn-able by hand, 4 or 5 clicks the wheel should not be able to be turned by hand in a forwards direction, 6 clicks and it should hold the vehicle, any more is just stretching the cable or there something amiss.

If all else fails I'll have a look for you Friday night after the laning gathering, we'll get it right before breakfast even if it takes all night!....Hope not as I need Zzz'S to maintain my youthfull exuberance.

Regards

Stuart
