Which is the best Fronty ever.........?

Postby andy135 on Sun Dec 18, 2011 1:52 am

I'm just coming up to having owned my Fronty "A" 2.0ltr sport R reg for six years. In that time, I have bought four tyres, one exhaust, one secondhand alternator, changed the metal brake pipes and full cambelt kit. The only time it goes off road is on tesco's car park, although it does pull about 20 trailer loads of horse shi............ erm, manure from the stables to my allotment every winter. I get around 25mpg................ honest, and I am wondering if in these times of hardship whether or not to turn the old girl out in favour of a diesel something?
Do I need 4x4, no I don't. But it is nice to be there just in case. I do quite fancy a 2.0 ltr picasso :? but I can't fault the Fronty for out and out reliability. Is there a Fronty which will give me better fuel economy?

I love the 2.8, but the 2.5 or the 2.2 dti are prolly more economical

I have the 2.8 and the 20hdi picaso and to be honest they compliment each other great, the fronty is quite modded the piccaso is mostly standard and suits us as a commute and family car with great econamy as the wife does a daily 55 mile round trip in it and its been solid with no problems in the last 50 k. Though we took it away this weekend for room and comfort we all wish we took the fronty as its snowed heavy lol and we are wondering if we will get out In the morning lol. , its what you need verse what you want.

How about a LPG'd v6, best of both, or a scenic RX4? Wanted a picasso before I got my last fronty, the top of the dash and a the glare it causes put me right off.. (think its the older dash's that do this)

Reckon it all depends on just what you want it for, for me the 2.8 is perfect. Pretty good mpg, very reliable and tough as old boots.

Saying that, I did have a wee problem with the truck last night, picking up the misses and her mates from their Christmas works do at some god foresaken hour in the morning from a 'out in the sticks' Oxfordshire pub the O/S back door lock decided it didnt want to play and just would not lock the door. A 10 min panic ensued with me having to rip the door to bits to get the lock gubbins out, turned out to be full of Oxfordshire/Wiltshire mud and it had frozen up. Manaeged to get it all cleaned out and back in though so all was well in the end. Total time? about 30 mins start to finish including shoving the lock thing under the hot tap in the pub to defrost and wash the sh*t out.

Looking ot other 4x4's, having driven various different landrovers from the Petrol Series 2, the Lightweight Air Portable, to the Defender I can honestly say that mile for mile I've had less breakdowns or trouble from the 2.8 and it's far more comfy too.

I must admit though, I could be tempted with a 3.2 with a gas kit as a spare but it would be no good for work, being a petrol engine I can't take it into the fuel installations or bang storeage areas....
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

Owning a 2.8 is a hobby in it's self...

I loved my 2.0l as it was very good on fuel and a capable truck. I love my 2.8 more it is great on fuel and very capable off road with only a 2" lift. Great as a daily drive and I can get all sorts of gear in the back for work. :D
