Fronty comes home

Postby FronteraGirl on Sun Nov 20, 2011 8:09 pm

Well I got my Fronty back today with a nice new MoT certificate (coupe of advisories for anti roll bars and corrosion underneath) and it cost me £270 to have the chassis welded up in 3 places, one being where that bar that holds the back axle on had parted, and 2 smaller holes, plus a ball joint and a few bulbs/bits and pieces. Trouble is, do I keep it or look around for something that doesn't have a rotten chassis? Either way, its good to have it back, although my pocket feels a little empty :|

I know what you are going through as I had it with my 2.2 but with fuel pump issues  along with other bits n bobs that it needed.

One thing I do remember is a comment from this site and it was quiet simply "better the devil you know" :?

So the thing I would put to you is; whats the engine like, whats the gearbox and transfer box like, as in are they reliable and you have no niggles with them, going from this what do you think is going to be needed in the next 12 months i.e exhust, break discs n pads and the like, then think of what you have spent so far and what you are prepaired to spend in the future now put that figure along with what your fronty is worth and then look around and see what you can get for that money but then also think, people very very rarely get rid of there 4x4's because they want a change more like there is something lerking underneith that is why they are wanting to sell them

any way whats been happning up in Turra and the Broch god I miss it so much

Crikey, you miss the Broch!?? Not much going on that I know about, I just keep me head down :P

I know what you're saying about the devil you know - I know this one has had the fuel tank welded back on, the chassis patched up in 3 more places, it had new brakes at the back last year and the MoT man says pads are worn at the front and need replacing soon. I also did a lot of work up front on the drivers side with that steering knuckle bearing and balljoints. It cost me a grand to buy it 'as seen' 18months ago, and I see another identical one for sale for £1500 - £2k, looks immaculate on the surface, bit of a townie looking location so hopefully not been abused like this one obviously has. I did have a clutch worry with mine, gave it a good drive home today and couldn't make it play up. So I still dunno!

Whats an X reg/2000 2.2 dti with a full years MoT and 3 months tax worth at this time of year?

Okay.... what with the cost of fuel these days, uncertainty in employment and the general 'green, tree huggy' everyone should hate 4x4's the price and market, (when its not snowing of course) has fallen through the floor as people are trading in for small powered shopping trolleys. London may well be a place to watch as this new charge begins to bite come the spring. And don't forget the threatened 3p / ltr fuel duty due to go on next year....

My ten pence.... would be to (if you can afford it of course) keep 'Oxide' (re-named your truck for you lol) and run it for the winter, then come spring when the price drops, go out and get another identical truck (but in better nick of course) which is the keeper. Over the summer swap over the good for the not so good with the aim of ending up with a truck in very good condition and one that, well runs.....

Now, get another 12 month ticket on 'Oxide' and either keep and run it as the toy or stick it on fleabay at a ridicules price (some chancer is looking for 2.5k for a 2.8 atm  ) and off load it.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

Owning a 2.8 is a hobby in it's self...

The big danger to me on a 4x4 is rust. If you have a patch put on the sill, thats quite normal but when you start slapping them on all over the place the chances are that next year you will need some more put on . The cost of welding and the safety aspect of it would make me think about getting shot of it. There is other work to be done in the near future with the brakes and who knows what else. The best time to sell for me is when you have just put a years ticket on it and with winter just round the corner, now would be a good time. Splash some cash and have a look at the other one.

yours is worth £1200 - £1500 at the moment. You will get more when the snow hits.
