this is? I have started to dismantle my dash ready to change the heater matrix next weekend, as I was taking the steering column cover off the pictured item fell out. For the life of me I cant see where it goes or what it does. Its a 2 piece item i.e its a nut over a bolt and the hole in the top takes an allen key. Any ideas?

Not for them.
The hole for the clutch one is too big and the brake peddle on is still there.

Nothing to do with the steering wheel adjustment handle is it?

that looks like one of the three bolts that hold the top half of the column to the bottom, just behind the wheel and about 6" down you should see a triangle with three bolts in it, check they are in place,

try where you steering lock is there is 3 or 4 bots that bolt the steering collum to the bulk head that come loose over while and cause the steering wheel to drift a little on its mounting these bolts are normally snapp off domed ones but near them is one that looks like that in mine fom when i was tighen them up
cheers

I have no steering wheel play without it since I have tightened up the sheer bolts which always vibrate loose.
Had a look on the workshop manual, nothing there either.
But I will have a look underneath the column tomorrow.
Cheers guys.
Will let you know if I find where it goes if it doesnt end up in the bin first.
