Newbie looking for advice re 4WD

Postby Campo Steve on Fri Jul 03, 2009 7:21 pm

I have just bought my first Opel Frontera. It's a 2.2 DTL 16V.

As I live in Spain the manual is in Spanish. Unfortunately my Spanish is not yet good enough to be able to read it.

1. Can anyone suggest where I might be able to download an English version?

2. Do I have to be stationary before pressing the button to select 4WD or can it be done on the move?

3. When I press the button to go back to 2WD the 4WD sumbol flashes for an eternity before eventually going out. Is there a technique to coming out of 4WD?

4. I have noticed a couple of times when in 4WD High that the H/L selector jumps into neutral and I have to stop to re-engage it. Doesn't seem to happen when in L. Any suggestions as to the problem, or is it my technique?

Hello & welcome to the forums Steve
Addressing your quires....

1) As far as I know there is none available, although printed handbooks do appear on Ebay from time to time.

2)No B series have "shift on the fly" so you can push the button at up to 93 km/h (60mph)( however shifting from high to low the car should be stationary).

3) Stop the car & reverse a short distance.

4)I would think the drive train is protecting itself, this normally only happens when travelling at to high a speed in any given gear.

Addendum.Remember only use 4WD on loose/slippery surfaces. There should be an advisory notice on the flip side of the drivers sun visor

4WD selection/deselection

Postby Campo Steve on Thu Jan 21, 2010 8:59 am

I have a 2000 Frontera Limited 2.2 TDI.

Unfortunately the Owners Manual is in Spanish.

Can anyone advise me of the procedure for selecting and desecting 4WD?

The main bit I need to know is how to deselect it i.e. revert to 2WD. I assume that needs be done whilst stationary. However, sometimes when I press the button to deselct 4WD the light flashes, and stays flashing. It appears not to come out of 4WD. But sometimes it does.

Also, is there an owners manual, in English, available for download anywhere, preferably free?

edit: Looks like I have posted this question before. The one reply suggested reversing a short distance before driving off in 2WD. However, I still find the light continues to flash.

Also note that you cannot change out of 4WD when in 4L,you need to shift back into 4H before pushing button.

Ok,

Only my personal experiences here but, if using 4wd high then to move to 2wd, just push the button. You may need to back off the throttle or dip the clutch for a second or 2 just to "sort of take the strain off the gear train" to allow it to get out of 4wd fully.

If using on hard surfaces JUST DONT. 4wd just only be used on slippy stuff. Have if using 4WD low, then then you must STOP to move to 4wd hi.
