Scrap pricesRead the other day in one of the threads that somewhere they was getting £120 a ton for scrap, even cars , i went enquiring the other day , best i got offered was £45 a ton ,has there been a sudden drop in the market ,or are scrappys boxing clever
Re: Scrap pricesAll depends on where you are and where you go to mate...
We are lucky down here as the frag is right next to the docks, so next to no on-costs for transportation of material, so better prices tend to be had... Depends on the yard you go to also, some specialize in non ferous and dont pay as much for steel, but pay better for alley and other stuff. Also how you have it processed makes a difference...end of life (ie cars) dont make as much as loads of non metal on them, so the £/ton you get are less... I cut mine up and hide the non metal stuff few tips to beat the scrappy as they will try to beat you.... Sweep your yard up to keep it tidy and file the results under the carpets in the car... Run a hose pipe into the car so carpets, seats have soaked up loads of water= more weight.... Always know what ya tow car weighs unladen with trailer, so you can tell if you are being fleeced on the weighbridge ticket.... Dont process stuff that can be sold for more as steel....alternators, battery's, inlet manifolds, alley wheels, catylitic converters make more £££ than steel... Ironyally will make twice steels price, and will include gearboxes, unstripped heads, alternators, manifolds etc... Shop around locally mate...and be prepared to wait to get the best price is the answer really And finally...have a word with the frag you go to about BUYING stuff...they will often sell you really useful steel in offcut managable sections for your projects for not much more than scrap value...blinding way to get offcut tube for bumpers, box for rocksliders, and sheet steel...
