banter general discussions etc
by scottishwolf on Tue May 26, 2009 5:58 pm
First of all hi guys, not been here in a while due to driving other cars and the fronty has been sat up the drive for well over a year. And excuse me, as this might turn out to be a bit of a rant Decided last week that I really needed another frontera so started looking through auttrader etc and found one down in Bradford. Drove down yesterday and bought it, a silver 1995 coil sprung 2.0 sport 99,000miles. I already have a 1993 sport with a 2.8 isuzu conversion that I might swap over as the bodywork on that one is a mess. Now to the bad bit, I bought it with a years MOT on it but after driving only 90 miles back up towards sunny Scotland the rear section of the exhaust fell off 'was held together with a ton of gun gum', noticed the rear lights were not working at all! and after driving it for a bit I noticed a tappety noise from the top of the engine. Looks like I might have bought a bit of a dog with possibly a dodgy MOT. It was bought from a place called 'trade cars 2 u' in Bradford. There was a problem with their card machine so I got what cash I could from the cash point and they said they would post the documents when I had sent the remainder! I had travelled all that way '320miles' and just wanted to get back up the road so accepted their offer. Tried calling them today and said about the lights etc but they 'were too busy to talk'. I'm gonna send the rest of the money and get the documents sent to me by registred post then have a good look through the service history etc. The car was apparently MOT'd that day so the fact that the lights were not working and the exhaust was in such bad nic makes me think it's a dodgy one. Gonna have to put the car into the auto elctrics place on thursday to get them to sort the lights out, I had a look myself but they have been rewired with all sorts of miss matched bits of wiring. It has towbar twin electrics so I might run the wires from there if the garage is gonna be too expensive, Just lost my job so cash is an issue They were based in a fairly big industrial unit with about 25 cars for sale. Once I get the docs I might contact VOSA as there is no way the car should have passed the mot. Is there anything else I can do? Also, can someone tell me what engine it will be in my fronty? late 95 model petrol. And is there any members from Ayrshire out there ??? Sorry for the rant guys but I'm not in the best of moods due to all this sheete. Think I'm gonna swap the bullbar and light guards over from my old one. At least I have another car for spares. new beastie old beastie cheers, Davie

Hi Davey First let me just say Sorry to hear that you have loads of problems, is there no way you can report the garage who did pass this car for its MOT, sound like the should lose their right to do MOT's as that does not seem Right or Fair to me! Don't blame you being mad, with this situation! and To The World Of FOG! This may help ya just scroll down to the part where you don't agree http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... DG_4022113 hope that helps ya

Hi mate, if i where you i would phone them again and tell them they will only get the rest of the money once they have sent the documents to you,if they refuse tell them about what happened to it on your way home and you want some money knocking off the price if they still wont budge just say you are going to get intouch with trading standards and vosa, put the ball in there court. if it is a dodgy mot they will try to sort something out with you.

Thanks for the replys folks. I'm gonna wait until I have all the documents, service history etc before doing anything just in case they try and pull a fast one. They said it was a new timing belt and i've just had a look and there's no way it is. I'll change that myself easy enough though. But as I've said, by the look of things, the service history might be bogus too. Once I have to documents I'll have a good look over them and take the car to a trusted local garage and put it through an MOT and see what they say. If there is any discrepance I'll report it to VOSA and the police. As I'm sure falcifying service history and false advertising is illegal. This is they're website.... http://www.tradecars2u.co.uk/101257/tradecars.htmThe guy says his name is Charlie Napton but his real name is actually Asghar Shah

Think I will go and see my solicitor actually. I'll wait until I have all the document s etc and then go and see what he says. I've emailed trading standards to with my concerns and got a reply asking me to call them once I revieve all the relevant documents and they can then advise me what to do. If anything illegal is suspected they deal with contacting the police down in Bradford etc. cheers

Funnily enough I bought a Truck from Scotland with a doggie MOT, when I got back home I put the details into the MOT record site and got the list of previous passes and fails incuding all the advisory notes. My car was issued with a fail at 89200miles at one garage and then given a pass at 89500 milesat another. I took it to my local garage who went through the mot fail list and advisory notes and found non of the work had been done, they consulted with sombody over the phone and I was advised that if I made a complaint that the car would have to be retested, the issueing garage would probably get there fingers rapped, but I would be then issued an Mot failure. Your garage could say that it was road legal when it left them and the lights packed up on your way home. However, I once bought a (ahem) Landrover one Friday night and took it back on the Monday morning and got my money back, threatening them with the office of fair trading as they had issued a mot on an unroadworthy vehicle.

Just found a piece of paper in the glove box! I didn't even know it was in there!!! I was looking for the pack of smokes I threw in there yesterday on the way up the road. It says the following:
"I declare that I am the buyer of the car described above 'reg no was written', at the price shown and I accept the terms of sale. Allowance for used vehichle which I/we certify is my own property and free from any legal encumbrances/ is subject to any H.P as stated".
TERMS OF SALE: 1. All vehicles sold over ten years old or below £1000.00 are sold as "trade sale" (trade to trade sale, no sale of goods act applies). It is the sole responsibility of the purchaser to be fully satisfied with the vehicle before entering an agreement. 2. A comprehensive warranty can be purchased from the garage if required at a cost upon agreement. 3. All discounted vehicles are sold as "trade sale" no warranty regardless of price as an allowance has been made for defects, faults, repairs etc. Including those that may occur after the purchase. 4. All p/x vehicles are liability of the former keeper, if any fault is found with the vehicle purchased by them.
There was alot of this going on in my area a few years ago where garages would put a disclaimer 'in' the vehicle and could get away with it. There was a law passed 'whether local, Scottish, or nationwide I do not know', that "all commercial premises selling vehicles of any kind must give at least a 3 month warranty against major defects and must be entierly honest in their opinion of the vehicle description".
Surley this dribble is not worth the paper it's written on? I never saw it! It was in the glove box.

Agreed dont click the email link, use a trusted link or shortcut to paypal to check your account. Personally I would report this to VOSA then take the rap to get it through an MOT but my biggest worry would be if the car is a ringer and looking at the web link you posted a company with a site like that and the cars they have, would they really sell a Frontera for a few hundred quid? something dont ring true with them, sorry. I was up in Bradford funnily enough about 6 weeks ago and was with my next door neighbour to look at a car, a shady bloke came out and saw us and even before we told him the make of the car we came to look at he told us it was sold I lost it a bit but Steve (neighbour) told me to leave it, so I took delight in writing a few reg numbers down of cars for sale ( no idea what I was going to do with them) the owner and his mate locked themselves in a portakabin now that was funny Just checked sat nav but must have deleted it, it was near the centre of Bradford next to a Focus/Homebase type of store. Use an online or text based car history service they will let you now if its a ringer or accident damaged and cost less than a fiver. Good luck and keep us posted. I feckin hate car rip offs
