Retired GreyhoundsAfter the recent passing of our jack russell Bruno, our house is empty.
We are considering offering a home to a retired Greyhound. Has anyone got any experience with the breed. ![]() ![]()
Re: Retired GreyhoundsI've heard they're not very keen on cats, but make brilliant pets otherwise, don't need loads of exercise, like to laze about a lot... I can't remember if you have cats??

Re: Retired GreyhoundsThey are really gentle loving family pets,I have met several owners over the years & none have had a bad word to say.
There is one particlar man who regularly walks his past my house. He has 3 retired greyhounds & 1 whippet they all stroll along together good as gold.
Re: Retired Greyhoundswhat about the cats thing?? maybe you could ask him? I heard they don't like them cause their like the hare thing they chase round, but that could just be a myth???

Re: Retired GreyhoundsWe have a greyhound, he is not a retired racer but an un-wanted failed racer. They are very gentle loyal and loving dogs. Like any dog you take in you have to get to know its likes, dis-likes and general nature. Joe was obviously brought up in a kennel enviroment where he had to compete for food so at first he was obsessed with food, but has relaxed abit now he knows he gets regular meals. If disturbed when he is asleep he wakes up with a snarl, also the result of the kennel situation. Some would say that would make him a nasty snappy dog but he is just reacting out of instinct, so not a problem when you understand why. We also have 4 cats and that was our main concern when we took him in. We monitored him very closely with them and things seem ok. Having another dog helps as he sees the cats getting on with another dog so he has excepted them as part of the family, more proof of this is that he will chase other cats away. He loves a run out in the fields, has a mad 10 minute run around and then is happy trundling along behind. I would recommend one to anyone, just be patient adjusting them from a working enviroment to a family one, and alot of them have never known love or affection.

Re: Retired GreyhoundsGood man.................Go for it Rich
Re: Retired GreyhoundsCool post Jim, I have read and heard that they make great pets, but then you always hear this thing about cats, but if Rich doesn't have them, it's even less of a worry. It never ceases to amaze me that however hard a dogs life has been, it's ALWAYS ready to trust the the next person and give them the same chance and benefit of doubt, I think people could learn a lot
Sounds like a done deal then Good luck CC '01 SWB 2.2L PETROL called Stanley Bean

Re: Retired GreyhoundsWe have just returned from the Retired Greyhound Trust. All the dogs were adorable, all friendly and happy to come for a fuss.
After looking at 30-40 dogs we narrowed it down to 3. 1. Kenny, black with a white blaze, beautiful dog with a habit of showing his teeth, not in aggressive manner, sort of a smile, but thought it might be off putting for our kids and visitors. 2. Milo, dark brindle, gorgeous markings, a bit too jumpy, like he was on springs, really friendly. 3. The one we've chose, Lenny, blue, stunning, his coat is like silk, walks lovely, likes a fuss, he actually leans up against you when you stop walking. Awaiting a home visit just to make sure gardens secure enough for him, if ok we can pick him up Saturday. ![]() ![]()
Re: Retired GreyhoundsSweet, they all lean up against you if you stand still for more than 5 seconds, lazy lumps

Re: Retired GreyhoundsNice one Rich, I those dogs we use to look after one when I was a kid, kept buggering off after rabbits though
Check his ears for tattoo's if they still do that to the racing dogs. Ste

Re: Retired GreyhoundsGet a nice deep bed, they have a lot of muscle and over developed chest. If you notice they scratch up any bed to pack it around them as its uncomfortable to lie on.
Or just let on your bed Well done by the way. Fronty no.4, pimp mobile Treg 3.2 LWB lifted 2.5"
