Frontera to Siberia!?

Postby Tobotron on Mon Oct 27, 2008 10:23 am

Hi everyone...I'm planning a road trip deep into Siberia and after considering my budget and a look at the 2nd hand market along with my co-drivers input and the fact that were probably going to fly home it came to my attention that the Frontera might be the way forward seeing as they can be picked up for under a grand.
Now my question to you is is the car capable in a bog standard semi reasonable condition of making the 5000mile journey? It will be on dirt tracks for most of the trip and of course it's going to be checked out for basic fixable problems prior to departure and fitted with extra tanks, tyres, and lights but seeing as you lot use these in the field what's your recommendation?...

I know you will all love the Frontera but if you could also point out it's problems too it would be most appreciated...

Thanks all! :)

I might even stay there lol...often work there in the summer so would consider staying if I got the right job in which case the Frontera would be coming back...only thinking of flying back as cars can be sold for a lot more over there and it would negotiate the risk of getting stuck on the way back, also my co-driver only has a little over a month to make the trip to Siberia in...it's not a proper organised trip no but something I've always wanted to do and I can kinda speak Russian and I have a lot of friends there so why not :)
Which model would you recommend as the 'lowest' maintenance? Most of the ones I've seen about are 2.0 petrol sports...I'm assuming all models will handle low octane Soviet fuel quality ok? My only experiences of off roaders are pretty legendary ones like a Defender on a military range which was insane climbs without even a squeeze on the throttle in 1st and an old Land Cruiser on Fraiser island AUS I'm not expecting it to be as good as those two but can they hit the mud without digging in? lol

Thanks for the quick response!

I would say get a 2.8tdi these are very basic engines with a nice amount of power and are very reliable, they are Isuzu engine so if you you do encounter any problems many part are interchangeable with the Trooper.

I would move the air filter intake away from its original position under the drivers wheel arch.

Remember though the Frontera is only part time 4wd.

Other than that enjoy 8)

Nice...part time 4 wheel drive isn't a problem, I've had some friends do a similar trip to Mongolia in a Fiat Panda 4x4 that lost it's rear real drive half way lol...just looking for the extra power of the Frontera so we don't have to worry so much about the weather or if we accidentally end up hitting some less than desirable roads...if I could I'ld take a UAZ-452 but sadly that would eat the planet and would require a small fortune in fuel :P
What should I be looking out for problem wise in general when buying 2nd hand and what advantages does it have over similar sub £1000 buys?
