Video Camera options

Postby optima on Sat Sep 13, 2008 10:25 pm

Hi All

I have been using my Sony small picture/video camera DSC-P8 which has been great but it does not support zoom while recording video :( and I would like a better quality video camera now so was thinking of upgrading to a purpose build video camera like a Sony DCR-SR35E and as they now do them with hard disks they have long recording times   so I can just leave it mounted all day. But has anyone used one with a hard disk for off roading ?? just wondering how long the disk would last ??

Any suggesting would be helpful also I have an inverter mounted in the Fronty so what ever I choose need to be capable of recording while plugged into the mains so I don’t have to carry a load of batteries with me...

Regards

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming...'Wow! What a ride!

We've had trouble recording to hard drive even when just competing in Sprints in Mustangs. We found switching to a camera that records onto SD card very useful.

The Panasonic HD Camera's do this. With very good results.

I went round and round in circles looking for a video camera and couldn't decide whether to go for tape/hard drive/sd card etc. Couldn't go down the bullet cam route as it cost loads of dosh by the time you buy everything.

Went on a laning trip beginning of the year and a guy there was using a JVC Hard Drive camcorder which also has the option to record onto SD Card and after seeing it in action went out and bought one. Its a JVC Everio with a 40Gb hard drive, 32x optical zoom and SD card slot that will accept HCSD cards.

I record to an 8Gb SD Card when laning or pay n play and use hard drive everywhere else, you can also get bigger batteries for them which give a huge record time :)
Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one :-(
