How to kill a starter motor ...2.5 TDS

Postby JBW on Mon Jun 02, 2008 11:47 pm

I switched off the ignition and the engine continued to run....Just like a petrol engine suffering pre-ignition...but she's a diesel. So brainless here, put it in first held the foot brake and dropped the clutch. Just about the same time I saw the smoke coming over the bonnet I realised what I was doing...Stalling an electric motor. They dont like it....

So looks like the solenoid failed, not sure how with the ignition in off... but end result is burnt out starter motor and suspect solenoid.

Anyone got a fast (non vauxhall main dealer) route to acquiring replacement parts at a competitive price...

Cheers, JBW

Thanks Drift.

Took alot and I mean ALOT of calls & emails yesterday but managed to find a breaker who's shipping me one at £50 inc shipping. BTW spoke with a company called Leader Components - they do lower cost (than VXLL) new parts. They were very helpful and were very knowledgable . They were my next stop should I have needed a new unit. The cost via leader would have been £235 inc shipping.

Spanners out this weekend then...

Got breaker part for £60 inc. delivery. took two weekends to fit. What an absolute pig of a job!!! However, now have serious vibration on front prop shaft. Have posted separate msg on this. I marked both front & rear flanges for alignment on refit., however I'm wondering if I managed to spin the bloody thing through 180 degrees and have fitted it back to front. Haynes manual states ' fit sliding section of propshaft to front'. Yeah, great, does it mean male or female part of telescopic shaft!
