County Council (East Sussex) have placed bollards at both ends of few byways. It may sound sily, but what are they for?
To stop non-4x4 accessing them?

exactly that ....
but unfortunately it won't stop the idiots on quads/dirt bikes who appear to do most of the damage to the byways and lanes

Yeah.. Just wondering, can I report one somewhere? There is one, weeks old one byway ear Shadoxhurst (Ashford, Kent) and its so high, that Im not able to pass it without help of bricks / stones etc - it is about 15inches high
Problem is that there is no place to reverse and its on the end of 5 mile byway..
You cant say its so bad on pics, but believe me, tried without any concrete blocks and only heard scrchhhhhh..
And yesterday on the same lane (it was dark) found sheep trapped in swamps. Tried to rescue her, but it was to dark and to dangerous. This morning decided to give it a second go, but no good... Swamps been to wide. FInally called RSPCA and together we managed to save her.
She was there at least 2 nights.. Tried to find field owner, but as found out later, someone sold these fields, and noone know whos the new owner..
