Thanks all for the warm welcome and advice, put the battery on today and she fired up without any problem, went into the local lucas depot and bought a reconditioned alternator for £77.00, will fit it some time next week, now for the manifold gasket..... 
the oil leak isnt that great so Ill leave that for the moment as its easier to just top up every now and then.
