newbee down south

Postby Fil-H on Wed Aug 27, 2014 9:37 pm

hi all
I'm a new 3.2 manual owner down in Dorset but I proudly had a 2.2 petrol black estate for approx. 11 years before I got this beast. Most of the upkeep I tackled myself so I will be asking lots of questions on the 3.2 whilst it's unfamiliar to me so I would be grateful of any help that any of you could offer. At least there was a Haynes manual for my old Fronty but no such luck for the new one!
Not sure if any of you are based this way or if there are any meets in this area?

Cheers for now
Phil

Hi all

Thanks for the friendly welcome and big thanks for the link to the workshop manual, but at 7070 pages it might take a little while to get through!!!

Having had my 3.2 for some three months now and I'm slowly getting to know it, but the first real jobs that have to be done pronto is to replace the front abs sensor (have enquired at my local Vauxhall garage and been told they are not available - marvellous !!!) but I'll do a separate post about that, and also get on with what gremlins seems to be lurking under my dashboard as the clock cluster only seems to work with the lights on now - never had half this trouble with my old 2.2i :?

I had tarted up my previous Frontera with loads of extra lights etc and I can't wait to do be able this to the new beast to give it a bit of individuality once everything seems to be working as it should depending on what's left in the kitty!

Thanks again
Phil

Check out the threads on here for a cheap fix for your ABS! Not having to do any i only think they use parts from a SAAB with a bit of fettleing.

Cool!

Whilst you wait I strongly suggest you soak the 5mm Allen bolt in WD-40, the more the better and let it soak in, then soak it again and again and again!

On mine the side that came apart all nice was the near side that we'd started to work on the weekend before when we were going to split the joints to do the work.
The joint splitter was to small so we couldn't start the work, but I'd been soaking the bolts the night before almost hourly to try and make life easier!

As it was when looking at the corner we worked out that you don't need to split any joint to replace the ABS sensor, so we came back to the job the next weekend and posted our steps and pics to show what we did!

The logic was simple the sensor was duff so no need to be careful with it, so we smashed it out with a big hammer and a solid bar (broken socket bar).

The side we had to put a bolt in was not soaked the night (or week) before it was soaked on the day for an hour or so ... and we had to drill it!
so soak it now, soak it some more and then again and maybe a few times more for luck!! :)

The job as a whole was much easier than we expected to be honest, the pain was the bolts and not soaking them enough, else it was just messy (grease and brake dust) on a nice sunny day!
