good morning, new member from sheffield with a 2.2rs

hi all,
well first off a little about my self, im 23, work as an electrical engineer an have a keen interest in anything with an engine. the main reason i bought a fronty is pureley by chance, i was looking on ebay for a cheap runaround to replace my toy for the winter( its an mgzr mk2, that ive stripped to a bare shell, resprayed, re built an converted to a 2.0 turbo as well as leather interior, home built brembo brakes etc) so looking on ebay i came across this rs, discussed it with my old man and decided to buy it so now im just doing some research into the model and any problems that may occour. i am actually quire suprised how nice it is but i suppose thats no consequence as a week before i had been for a test drive in an old series 3 landrover . so now im sure its an rs but it doesent have an a bar or running boards, and it also has a crack in the manifold, crack in the top of the radiator and looks like a bracket has rusted off the rear chassis near the rear diff, so i hope to fix these problems with the help of this forum, and who knows maybe mod her a bit aswell!!!

Its got to be a 2.2RS if theres a crack in the manifold...

Had the same on mine (Project Knuckleskinner..see http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=36697 )when I rebuilt the engine...

The manifold is not that difficult to source, VX knock them out at £150 - £170.. but a scrappy is around £10-30 - and coincidentally.. EXACTLY the same as the 2.2 Omega (watch out though, theres 2 flavours, 1 has an additional 2 holes on the top for something.. Its the one with the 10 stud / holes, not the 12 hole pattern your after).

The rest sounds not too bad to put right...

The X22XE engines are still in production (Daewoo) so parts are easy to source - and cheaper than Vx (Sintra / astra / Omega / vectra all used the same block, but you willl need to swop sumps over on some engines).

They can occasionally be prone to a weak bottom end, throwing a con rod / big ends etc and the manifold crack is almost a given. The engine model is the first 5 digits of the serial number on the block, normally stamped into the rear of the block exhaust manifold side.... it should either be a X22XE or a X22SE.. not a massive amount of difference to the internals..

cheers for the replies, any way heres a few photos, there only of me picking up a trailer from work and of course a couple of my other toy, i was thinking i could remove the manifold and get one of the lads a t work to weld it up, i know its cast but we have the ability to weld them up at work, warming furnaces and cast welding rods so in sure i could convince one of them to do it and then just put it in a surface grinder if its gone all the way to the flange etc.
